Subject: A Guide How to Post Good Community Topics

I've read though the forum rules, Terms of Use and Code of Conduct. Also, I have basic understanding of them, but is there a guide how to make good topics? Well, not for good or bad but just basic guidelines one can apply when composing a post?

Here are some guides that have been suggested so far:- Try not to make common threads. Do some research of existing topics
- Having solid information is a good idea
- Layout your post with good grammar and spelling. Paragraphs are a plus.
- Try not to make it too long or a wall of text
- Stay on topic

What kind of guidelines would you suggest?

I'd guess make sure it hasn't been posted before, Or at least not recently (Unless the question recently posted was left unanswered).

Don't be dumb or post silly useless topics and you'll be fine.

It comes with time. Heck, I've been here for six years and I am still figuring out how to write a good post. Here's a few good tips.

1. Correct grammar.

2. Stay on topic.

3. Have your facts correct.

These three come to mind, but no one is perfect. You will see posts where people sort of stray off topic and other posts where people butcher the English language. (Myself included)

Paragraphs help too, If it's long.
Few people want to work through a big, Mashed up block of text.

Generally, good topics encourage debate or discussion amongst the members. Do that, and you'll be fine. And remember. Just because it's a hot topic does not mean it's a "good" topic.

"It's not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me."

First off, it really just depends on the topic. Some topics can be repeated over and over again, so try not to do the common ones.

Secondly, having solid information is a good idea. Don't just give a short explanation about something. Make sure to back it up.

Third, have a good layout. I've seen manyathread where the topic may be decent, but the layout is horrible, and it turns me off. Basically, don't create huge walls of text, and know when to use formatting.

I think This is a good example of Navweb's guideline.

This is both hard and obvious: make it interesting.

People need something to discuss.

It needs to be...
-Widely relatable
-interesting
-open for response

Basically have a topic that applies to lots of people, that peaks their interest and has possibility for replies.

Titles, the Flood, spam, and the need for more Ninja's are always excellent discussion points.

I came into this thread thinking it was a guide, and I was going to say "don't try to make every thread into a guide" as my advice. But I think it's still good advice.

If you're in the Reach Forums, just simply state that your opinion is fact and insult a few of the demographics, and apparently it becomes a hot topic.
