Ok, Bungie mentioned in an update that there is a new thing called precomputed radiance.
Now radiance is the light that reflects off of an object.
EXAMPLE of RADIANCE
take a white peice of paper, and place it in a well lit space.
Hover your hand over it and you will notice that the light will bounce off the paper
and give your hand somewhat of a white glow on your palm.
The desert is sand, sand is a light and very bright yellow/tan color, his armor is green and reflective. So when the sun's light hits the sand, the color gets reflected onto the cheif, making his armor look like it has a golden brown look to it.
Proof of what Bungie said about radience
Q
What kind of graphics can we expect from Halo 3?
A
Halo 3's graphics will include the features seen in the real-time trailer and more, these are rendered using a new graphics engine, making the most of next-gen features like HDR (High Dynamic Range) lighting, pre-computed radiance transfer, and much, much more. The game will also take full advantage of the Xbox 360's HDTV capabilities.
