Subject: Why is the plasma repeater a thing?

Honestly, why?

Manual overheat venting could have just been present in the older model of PR, or simply a selectable option.

I see no damn reason to have added this into canon.

Bungie's designers got bored of standard Halo.

Hence, well, everything.

But... adding in something completely redundant out of the blue is.... WHY????

  • 05.11.2012 8:56 PM PDT

Prior to Reach's release Bungie claimed to have beefed up the plasma rifle - they said this was fine in campaign, but didn't want it in the multiplayer, and so they created the less powerful and slightly different plasma repeater.

I'm an Anarchist. I don't need a government to be a good person, but I'm glad it's here because some of you clearly do.

Why not?

It's easy to fit it into the canon, I think. After all, if I'm not mistaken, some US Army units are still using the considerably outdated M16A2, when Marines are issued M16A4's. Weapons come and go into service like uncomfortable travelers.

For all we know, the Repeater could just be an alternate to the Rifle, just like the M4 to the M16.

Maybe there's some special applications in which the repeater is far superior that just aren't touched on in Reach. The MA5k exists outside the games, so why can't the repeater exist? Maybe it was just implemented to show that the covenant didn't all use cookie-cutter weapons and had a large arsenal, just like humans do.

Still using a pump-action shotgun over 500 years in the future I see.

omg not realistic stop game production plz

Not sure really, I'd rather the Plasma Rifle have been more powerful like its awesome Halo CE version.

Straight from the wandering mind of Watson 203

Game canon < Book canon
'nuff said

On another note, I like it in terms of gameplay. I'm not too sure why but hey.

If you're passionate about the thing you're talking about, I'll always lend an ear.

It was nice in the beta but now it's utterly useless. It fell into the wasted potential pile of Reach.

Canon-wise. It makes more sense to have more variety of weapons within the covenant. So any addition, generally is a good thing.

The repeater is the Covenant equivalent for the assault rifle. It has nothing in common with the anti-shield PR, except that both are automatic weapons. It's not redundant, it's just meh.

Eh, I really preferred the beta plasma repeater. Although I'm not sure how the weapon falls into canon with the rest of the series.

Ya know, when I say stuff like that, people just write me off as a hater and whatnot, but just look at the game. I don't see how any of the new stuff they added is good for the Haloverse. I wouldn't mind it as much, if they replaced the established canon with something better, but they've replaced it with something worse.

Yeah, on Heroic. On Legendary, the plasma pistol is better.

Yet it was included in campaign and firefight, where it is more useful in the hands of the enemy. I never choose Elite Rangers because their weapons are useless to me.

I'm betting the concussion rifle was also made for mp...

Exactly. And now, whether we like it or not, Halo will continue to branch out from this bastardized clot in the series.

Hanger one I just shredded with the SMGs until ammo was out and I just threw 'nades like a boss while BRing.

My experience playing Cairo Station on Legendary

I love the Plasma Repeater. It feels like a more powerful Plasma Rifle.

It was to be the replacement of the Plasma rifle in MP, but it was too weak. Honestly it should have stayed how it was in the Beta. Along with the Plasma Launcher and DMR.

I see no damn reason why the brute plasma rifle needed to exist. Why make the distinction with the color and quicker fire rate with the weapon? Why even give the lowly brute a plasma rifle, I mean I can understand the prophet of truth giving them these weapons, but why the color distinction and the change in fire rate (which is not necessarily canon but the color is likely to make the transition in book canon, not sure if it has or has not)?

There are a lot of things in halo that really seems to have no purpose (ex. Brute PR, halo 2's spectre and halo 3's prowler, the halo 2 covenant transport land vehicle), or at least no purpose in the game canon, but that's because the game doesn't go in depth for that specific weapon. Just like it didn't go in depth for the reason why the DMR is the primary ranged rifle, considering the BR at least had a prototype out and available (Contact Harvest). Saying why is it there at all and basing it off game mechanics is not really a good approach to the actual canon of that weapon.

Maybe it was a steadier fire weapon? It isn't held solely with one hand like the plasma rifle. Perhaps it's built to help steadiness because of the increase in fire rate adds to the recoil and has a sufficient effect on elites firing that weapon (the difference between a pistol and a rifle). Now this is speculation but the possibility for depth and reason for this weapon can be plausible.

If we want we can address why even add all the other weapons to the halo universe, they are there essentially to expand the halo universe. Halo Reach had this kind of "prototype" feel. You flew in a secret orbital fighter, you carried the DMR (never seen before), the earlier version of the MA5B, the pistol was an earlier version. To say these aren't really necessary can be true, but simultaneously they give us the weapons that were used by noble team and the marines and army soldiers around them. The Plasma Repeater is no exception to this, and it gives us an idea that there were different weapons used by the covenant. That before Halo CE there were weapons that were used and potentially discontinued, or just not prevalent with the forces that we fought against.

Seal, we get it, you don't like Reach.

Constantly and constantly you come to this forum and with almost any thread somewhat related with reach you come out with a one liner reply that is somewhat topical to the thread, but is ultimately just a restatement of your dislike for reach.

You are not adding to the conversation, you are not posting material that is on topic, and it's starting to become borderline spamming. If it's a forum that asks for your opinion on Halo Reach, go for it because that's the place to express it, but it's unnecessary in this thread. All you are doing is inciting a reason for someone who likes reach to respond, and giving you a reason to debate them, and I'm frankly tired of it.

  • 05.12.2012 7:35 PM PDT

Do I really need a signature?

I think both the rifle and repeater are useless. I think they shouldn't have created the repeater and made the rifle better.

You really think that an army of trillions would all look the same and use the same weapons?

Anyway all I had to do was look at the title of this thread to not want to read the OP

Now wait just a minute there. The H2 Spectre was an adaptation of a vehicle in the E3 1999 demo. It was much more distinct than the Brute plasma rifle.

Though I agree about the Prowler having no purpose. It was a poor quality vehicle in that it had a slow start-up time, no boost, didn't really intimidate enemies, and didn't have as much traction as the Spectre.

And why not?

I'm sure it was featured on the cover of either TFoR or First Strike. I can't remember which though.
