Subject: Forum Feature Idea - Fly Your Banner.

@Helveck

Just an Average Joe...

Recently I had come up with an idea regarding further ways members within this site may creatively identify their presence here or distinguish their unified banner

Recently I began thinking about ways in which members might be able bring a little more customization into their accounts or more specifically have a way to identify themselves  as belonging to a certain Group.

How? Well there are several different ways a feature like this may be implemented. I'll discuss a few below...

Firstly I thought it would be an interesting idea if group admins (or participating members) could create a group emblem. All members belonging to that group could then chose this emblem to act as their avatar.

Obviously if you belonged to more than one group you would evidently chose which emblem you most preferred and as such their would be a selection icon to chose which groups avatar you wish to have active.

But then I realized the emblem process would be long and complicated to implement. Or at least I'm assuming.

Which lead me to my next thought... Why not have an area under the avatar to display the group name of your choosing in which you are a member of? It's a bit easier to implement I'm sure, and I think it would be a nice way to publicize or fly the flag of your most favourite group of choice.

That, or group admins could create a short motto which would be displayed under the avatar as opposed to the group name. Then members could select to have their motto appear for all to see, which may bring about curiosity and drive members to explore new groups on their own without having to have them pushed on them via PM, etc...

Anyway, just an idea I figured I'd share to see what some of you thought.

That would be a nice feature!

  • 05.12.2012 2:02 PM PDT

That's actually a really good idea. It wouldn't look out of place either.

Trying something once will increace your chances of success, because you tried it. Try someting twice, and your chances increase yet again - seeing as you've done it. Try something a few thousand times, and your chances of success is exponentially increased; this increase would likely provide success every time

It's an interesting idea, that much is sure - in my mind though, it seems borderline redundant. This isn't saying I wouldn't flaunt "We're a big secret. Shh." or anything though....

A lot of simple questions can be answered with simple solutions to prevent abuse. So my solution would be, you must posses a minimum of X amount of members to utilize this feature... The number can be up for debate.

What if the images brakes the rules? If the group had say 1000 members can the image broke the rules and everyone was using it what would happen?

(I like the idea but someone has to debate the ideas and not just agree)

No, I agree. It's just I think some questions are fairly easy to answer by oneself. Though this question is a bit trickier, so I'll have a go...

I said in the OP, the avatar idea is a lot less likely because of reasons such as creating an emblem maker online is I'm sure a daunting task. As well, policing custom emblems from a users own generated tools would be a lot of work as well. So, why not reserve the emblem for certain groups that meet certain requirements?

Take for instance the idea that only groups with over several hundred members can use the emblem feature. This makes it a tad easier to police and monitor events in the event any shenanigans transpire. Or it may even make it easier to have them approved before being activated. If a screening process is not possible, the group that has been granted access to this feature as a result of having an abundance of members, will automatically have access to the function. If its abused, their group is shut down.

What about instead of using the idea of x amount of members only groups that are approved could use thing features.. because groups such as HFCS and other small invite only group that dont want 500 members could uze this.

As of would approve these group i have no idea....

Maybe, but there are groups that have been active for many year but have dumb people as admins.. but having the threat that your group will be shut down if your break the rules may keep them in check.

I like the under avatar idea. Give the group a short motto and let that be displayed. It lets everyone advertise one group, without looking out of place or spammy.

  • 05.12.2012 6:55 PM PDT

I doubt I would use it, but I think it's a great idea.

Agreed. I think I could be presented rather neatly, and not in an obnoxious manner.

What if a group had to be "Certified" before this was available? Nothing like an in-depth search, but a few requirements (ex. 20+ members, 5 news posts, 2+ forum pages, etc.) so that someone couldn't just make a group and pop in a ton of alts.

And no, I didn't evade the profanity filter for that.

I don't like this idea. I can just imagine the elitism and group wars on the mains if each member was readily identifiable to a single group.
