I have been a part of the Bungie community for quite some time. I know my profile says that I just joined yesterday, but for some reason, I could not log into my old account (probably because I was using an email address I no longer use). In any case, I have started this thread in order to encourage better grammar and/or spelling amongst the community. I enjoy intelligent discussions and even healthy trash talking, all the while spelling every "the" and "you" like they were meant to be spelled. I do enjoy some of the theories, suggestions, and questions being raised by members of the community. But those things might have a bit more weight if they were not written in ebonics (which, although a derivative, is not actually considered English).

So if we all took time off from either playing Halo or posting on Bungie.net to do a bit of English/grammar/spelling/vocabulary homework, we could all be in a better place. By all means, do your other homework as well. Please, flame away.

If it's legible (you can read it despite the mistakes), then there's not really a problem. I only let poor typing bother me when I have no idea what the person is talking about.

In short, compared to every other problem on Bungie.net, this is miniscule.

While grammar is a necessity in the more mature gaming communities, frankly here it's merely a bonus. In my opinion, if it's legible then it's fine, if it's not, then chances are it's not worth reading.

The only thing that bothers me is when members don't capitalize the first word of their sentences... and proper nouns... well, unproper grammar just drives me nuts.

*Snicker*

It's something I don't like, but I still read it. It's really not something to make a big deal over.

Everytime I read a sentence that's a run on/comma splice, my eye twitches.

But, most of our members haven't been taught the parts of speech and such, so it's not really their fault. For those of you who have been taught the English language but continue to abuse it, shame on you!

Bungie can do whatever it wants, it's their forum. Under the Constitution, they're allowed to say, "No other languages." I'm not unsympathetic to your cause, so please don't misinterpret my rebuttal. I'm just stating that you really don't have any legal say regarding that matter.

As far as I am aware, there is no constitutional law actually preventing someone from posting in a different language on a public forum. That being said, the person who holds all rights to the website is allowed to set any rules that they wish. If that person states that they do not permit posts in other languages, that person is allowed to make such a rule, and enforce it.

As far as I can tell with the Bungie forums, anything can be posted in another language, provided there are two basic rules to follow:

1) This is a public forum, and thus other people need to be able to read it. I highly doubt the moderators are going to permit any conversations in a non-English language, because I doubt the majority of people understand a single secondary language.

2) The post does not contain any content that is "inappropriate, profane, defamatory, infringing, obscene, indecent or unlawful."

I only say this because I found nothing about foreign language in the Terms of Use or the Code of Conduct.

You make a good point. With Dutch being my native language, I am sympathetic with people who are trying to bring their message across in English. As for all the 1337-speak, it comes in handy when you have to deliver messages fast, in say, WoW, but definitely not here, get rid of it.

As for grammar, that's not a strong point of mine either so I'll just go with saying that I'm trying.

Good thing for you to bring it up. It helps countering the stupefication (or is that stupefaction?) of internet communities and people in general.

True...that and occasionally someone starts a thread in The Flood in another language and to my surprise it actually goes on until no one is interested in the Topic and they actually speak in the language of the original post...so yea mods let different language posts go on...mainly in my mind because I know that most of them can speak at least more than one language probably.

Schools should start forcing kids to learn to touch type. There wouldn't be a problem if they could, since typing 'u' would be as trivial as typing 'you' at the speeds they'll be typing.

Unfortunately, the abuse of the English language is not confined to Bungie.net. This site is fairly tame compared to other ones I frequent. I once attempted to have a conversation with someone who had horrendous typing skills, and subsequently was forced to compare them to a chimp, trying to type in "leet", while sulfuric acid was being dumped all over the keyboard. They weren't too happy about that. It really does not take too long to click "Preview" and proof-read your posts, and it's a common courtesy that should be extended to everyone by everyone.

"If it's legible"
Not so, you can understand them, but it may not be what they meant.
Here's an example:
With proper grammar: I helped my Uncle, Jack, off a horse.
With improper grammar: i helped my uncle jack off a horse.

See?
