Subject: How Reach didn't destroy the canon, but fixed it

I started up the heated debate on whether the SPARTAN-II in the cryo tube near the end of Reach is really Linda.
I created the Moa XING avatar pic.
Also I earned the All Star nameplate with this submission to Week 14 All Stars http://www.bungie.net/images/News/Inline11/bwu_0415/art/likea boss.jpg

It aggravates me when people say Reach destroyed the canon that The Fall of Reach established over 10 years ago. If you ask me, I think Reach actually fixed some things in the canon. While the campaign was BORING and DULL, the overall added content did make things a bit more clearer.

Spartan-IIIs in MJOLNIR
First off the whole purpose of Spartan-IIIs were to be disposable soldiers. But it would make sense that the best of the best would receive MJOLNIR armor. It is a huge waste of resources to train some soldiers for 7 years, and have them all killed off in a (important) mission just less than a year after graduation. What about all those years during training? It would make sense that a couple of S-IIIs would get some MJOLNIR. Also while we know what MJOLNIR Noble wears in Reach, it could be a "cheaper" versions.

Orbital MAC stations
People often complain about the fact that we don't see any MAC platforms during LNoS. First off, a planet is HUGE. There's not going to be a platform covering every mile of the planet. The fact that we didn't see any during LNoS doesn't surprise me at all. Also if there were any in the area, the LNoS could have destroyed them. We see in Halo 2 that a antimatter charge can easily destroy a platform.

Timeline
Reach is a military planet that is just less heavily defended than Earth. It would make sense that it would take Reach about a month to fall than 1 day. Also it would make sense for the Spartan-IIs to be called to Reach when it is being attacked. I find it a bit too convenient that all the S-IIs get called to Reach just for Reach to get invaded the next couple of days.

Pillar of Autumn and Forerunner complex
It would make sense that Keyes could not land the PoA back on Reach to rescue Red Team but to instead retrieve Cortana's fragment. Also it doesn't make sense for Cortana to decode Forerunner symbols unless she she had some knowledge of them. Having Halsey study the Sword Base site would give the UNSC knowledge on Forerunner language and how to decode it.

The Pillar of Autumn can't go in atmosphere. If it does then it's stuck in atmosphere. Explain that.

Haha, I'm with you on this one. It's 1am here. All I have to say is I like the positive spin you have on this.

As someone whose two threads served to expand and better illuminate the successes of Halo: Reach: No. No it didn't, and how you manage to churn out the number of brain-numbing threads you do is unfathomable to me.

The fact that the Pillar of Autumn has an emergency landing sequence proves that Halcyon Cruisers can be in atmosphere.

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

Honestly, 343 made things a bit worse with the Data Drops. I like Reach and all, but if they just would've followed what Bungie did with the note saying the events we see in Reach are a reconstruction by ONI, it would've been fine.

Reach didn't destroy canon. It destroyed combat.

LNoS' mission start doesn't have much replayability. It's mostly sightseeing. The infinitely spawning waves are only good for Cr or for their weapons (rocket launcher, sniper rifle, concussion rifle).

I'd imagine the booster are to thank for that.

No, like I've said many times before: the Halsey Journal package makes perfectly clear that the game (Reach) is an attempt by ONI to recreate what happened to Noble Team.

In other words: what we played is not the real deal. We played an interpretation of the actual events based upon found footage from security cams, some recovered data, maybe eye witness reports.

And that explains the many collisions between the game and the events as they were (Fall of Reach, which really didn't go in as much detail on the ground ops as most people make the book out to do).

In other words: Reach and the Fall of Reach don't as much contradict each other, but supplement each other (Reach being more about the ground battle, and some elements we didn't know before as shown in the ONI Files. Fall of Reach covering the space battle) and in a lot of instances can exist next to each other with the knowledge that the game we've played might not be 100% accurate.

I really keep on being suprised how even the most hardcore fans seem to continue to read over that all important sentence in the letters coming with Halseys Journal. Because with that 1 little sentence, Bungie and Nylund made sure they'd have more freedom within the game and still have it fit canonically within the existing universe.

Of course Reach didn't break the canon because the Fall of Reach isn't canon and never was canon like all the other books (maybe except Contact Harvest and The Flood).

Emergency landing sequence. Think about that, the PoA can go in atmosphere, but once it does it doesn't have the power to leave the atmosphere. It's literally trapped.

My god...why the -blam!- did you open this can of worms...

BTW the whole S-III in MJOLNIR armor is stupid. You said it yourself the S-III were nothing but disposable soldiers. You know what that means right? ONI didn't give a -blam!- about the price tag for the S-III, you needed to buy time for the UNSC and that meant creating the S-III program for doing just that. As Margret said "So trade lives for time."

Uh, yeah no.

Reach was more heavily defended by the time the Covenant attacked than Earth was at this time. After Reach had fallen, in the meeting in Sydney, the UNSC HIGHCOM were talking about Earth's Orbital Defense Grid not coming online until a couple of weeks, I believe.

Reach was much more heavily defended than Earth by it's fall.

Indeed. I like Reach. I've defended it on numerous occasions. But I don't have the friggin' brainpower to sift through that mess of drivel, even if it is technically trying to argue on the same side as I am. Trying to find the actual logic in it is like rubbing my brain against a cheese grater.

Christ, it was nearly two years ago. Let it lie; it's hardly a very important part of the universe anyway, and the end result is still that the Autumn flees and heads to Halo, which is all that really matters.
