Subject: Cross-account Bumping; it can go unnoticed

USAF Air Traffic Controller.

I don't think this is big enough of an issue to change anything currently in place. You notice it? Report and/or message a moderator.

There are already measures in place to detect if you're using an alt. The issue is that it's hard to know exactly when the problem is actually a problem, so it isn't incredibly proactive and only automatically takes action when a user is banned and an alt logs in (IIRC, because I've never actually experienced this). In my mind, this is because there are legitimate reasons why two separate accounts might have the same IP address.

Either way, "buddy bumping" is against the rules, so it doesn't really matter if the friend bumping your thread is real or imaginary. It will be handled the same way.

If you bump mine I'll bump yours ;)

Nah, but this isn't anything new. People have used this for spam attacks in public and private groups and ultimately just get banned anyway. The other solution to this, which I have already been looking into, is to restrict account from posting in certain main forums based on criteria. Essentially a "NeoGAF" style for posting. I am cooking up a thread on this and it will probably be posted sometime this week.

Preface - Instead of looking for ways to ban people that spam and use these alt accounts (IE an "after effect"), find solutions to stop them ahead of time, before it even happens. Being proactive rather than reactive.

I've done it once or twice (we're talking years ago, like 3-5 years ago). I regret it. It's not that big a deal that needs any massive change. I'd agree with... just reporting the posts if you know.

8/5/08 Bungie Favorites- NoEnd
7/1/09 Bungie Favorites- RECON Devil
9/9/09 Bungie Favorites- Champion
5/22/10 HaloCharts Favs- Prey

I really don't see the huge deal with multiple account bumping. Good content will continue to be discussed while poor content will eventually sink.

Like they always say, "You mess with the Helix Nebula, you get the WinyPit82."

Hi there! be sure to click that homepage link!

They can find out that you are bypassing a ban by using an account on the same IP, but are they really moderating whose accounts are whose? It's a good question.
