Hey what's up guys,
I've been gettin back into the flow of the game and one thing that I've always had trouble on is the melee. It can't be that hard because people often kill me with it even though it looks like I've wacked them two or three times. I'm pretty sure my problem is that you have to lead a melee--but by how much? Does anybody have a video or something that would help me see when I should hit the melee button while charging? Keep in mind that I have pretty okay ping, about 40-70, so bad internet speed is not the problem. Thanks for the help : )!

Welcome to my signature, apparently I can't respond right now so please don't leave me a message, because I will not get back back to you after the beep.

Meh, you don't lead melees. Here's what you do.

Run straight at a person you want to melee and as soon as they pass you on your left side, quickly swing your mouse to the left and hit the melee button. You should be able to hit them in the back area or at the side and they die instantly. I'll need to do a video tutorial on this someday, hehe.

Not lead exactly, think of it more as a delay. He doesnt hit right away, account for half a second or so of delay.

Yes there is lag in melee attacks, someone on these boards has a funny video where he follows a guy for about 30 feet smacking him in the back but he doesn't die. Then the guy turns around and kills him.

I get that, what bothers me most is how i cant do damage to people who are moving. if i person is standing still and i hit them, they take damage, but if they strafe i can hit them again and again and it wont do any kind of damage, they can walk away with full health and shield after being shot 4 times with a sniper rifle. This is particularly annoying on sniper only-no shield games, where i snipe a running guy 2 out of 4 shots, he bleeds everywhere but doesnt even know hes been hit. Then someone else shoots me once, not even a headshot, and it kills me.

This i was going to ask about in a separate post, but, this forum account is too young to make new ones :( whats the deal with this? u know how annoying it is to hit someone enough to kill him 6 times over and he still walks away?

Well when it's too laggy I simply shoot. Atleast try because maybe I'm shooting an enemy that isn't even there. But back to melee's, I suggest you don't try to use them until you get better internet connection. Only if you''re behind an enemy sniper and hasn't found out yet. I now expertise at melee's, and I had that same problem of your's my friend. But I got myself better internet connection and now it's a much better case. So I suggest you beg your parents, or if you live alone to get a better connection.

Sounds like you have high ping. When you do something like shoot or melee, you tell your computer via your keyboard/mouse. Your computer then displays what it THINKS happened while telling the server. The same thing is happening with the player you're shooting at. If he's got lower ping, he might not really be where you think he is. So you see him bleed or melee him and see his shields light up and he does not die.

If he's stationary, he dies because there's no discrepancy about his location and you can actually hit him.

MMmkay, let me rephrase what I'm asking. You guys are telling me that there's about half a second between when I hit the button and when the Masterchief actually melees--I got that. However, I've heard that you need to hit the thin air right in front of a guy (assuming he's moving forward), due to lag. The same with someone on your left, if you're going for a backstab supposedly you not only lead him based on his movement, but also account for lag and aim even further away from him. Do I have the right info here?

It wouldn't benefit you or anybody else if you raised other people's pings.

You simply have to lead your shots, as instead of aiming and shooting right at a person, aim a little ahead in the direction that they are going.

You actually do have to lead your melees a little bit. I've meleed people tons of times in the back while they're moving and it didn't do a thing. The trick is to catch up to them quickly and to melee in the direction that they are going.

No you don't have to give up. Just try to aim where you think he'll be in the next half a second or so. And if he wants to stay alive, he'll try to be somewhere else.

I've found that there's no 'lag time' - melee works almost instantaneously. What the problem is that the position of the enemy on your screen and the position of the enemy on the server is slightly off. What you need to do is, as simonjester says, is look at where the enemy is heading and melee about a foot in front. In direct combat (he knows you're there and you're both blasting away with pistols) the best approach is just when you pass each other turn 180 and melee. If the enemy is heading away from you and doesn't know you're there, unless he stops or you have a plasma weapon you won't be able to melee him.

Melee is a fricking excellent weapon tactic - it has a 25% instant kill, 25% serious damage and 50% miss rate. I've killed quite a few hvy weapon guys with melee that would have otherwise toasted me, especially on Danger Canyon middle room.

Meleeing is fun.

Guys, remember that a running melee does more damage than a melee while standing still, but that a jumping melee is even more powerful. Most importantly, a melee to the back is an instant kill, whether the person has an overshield or not.
