Forever Pyro

This website has been up for so long, but still has no avatars.
Avatars aren't special, and not abusable.

Have you seen my mind anywhere? I seem to have lost it...

0x0 x0x 0x0 000 000 x0x 000
x0x 0x0 0x0 0xx 000 0x0 000
x0x x0x x00 0xx 0x0 x0x 0x0

I have seen you future

I imagine that the reason is that they don't want to have to sort through avatars to make sure that they are appropriate.

OP, how do you propose allowing users to use their own avatars without people uploading inappropriate images?

Uhhh, they do all use .GIFs. Unless I'm misinterpreting some part of your connotation.

OT: Bungie having some trust issues seems to be the reason why they don't allow custom avatars on this site.

Who the hell do you think I am?

We already have a huge set of cool avatars given to us. We don't need to upload anything.

This is the crux of the issue. The problem is that a loud minority would use their imagination in choosing their avatars. As far as media (television, games, books, etc) developers are concerned, Bungie is, and has been, remarkably family-friendly, which is a feature I enjoy. (After all, I come here to chat about games, not see an F-bomb every other line) I say this to explain that their stance on custom avatars is quite understandable and certainly not a mark of a regressive web development team.

They could easily check the image, when the image is uploaded, the mods take a look, if they are still checking if it's appropriate, it will say image pending. If it is accepted, it will appear as your avatar, if rejected, your previous avatar will be used.

Because it can be abused. I mean think about it. Bungie.net isn't Facebook. Facebook has custom avatars, and people on there just ask for likes all the time. So if we got them here, we would get the same situation.

Also, everyone would get genitals as their avatar. Everybody. Have you seen the Flood? I mean.. it's the Flood. Everybody would just troll with their avatars.

And what about if they use a picture that has a virus on it? That would break the server.

Seriously, you need to learn about stuff before you post.

I'll be leaving now.

Just so you know, Snipe, I'd stick with my Septagon. Have a little faith in humanity.

On second thought, just do not allow anybody who has ever visited the Flood to have a custom avatar. Problem solved.

You grossly underestimate how many people come to these forums. There's no possible way that employees or moderators could individually approve each avatar.

When things are around long enough, they become commonplace and don't get abused. Almost every other forum with avatars has an option for a customizable avatar, and are very rarely abused.

Don't misunderstand me, I don't see a huge problem with allowing custom avatars. At least in some kind of limited form. Perhaps if you attained a certain trust rating, you could then be allowed to upload a custom avatar. It would add some value to an account, and it would weed out the people who would be more prone to abusing it.

I said Bungie doesn't seem to trust the community to not abuse this. Or, at least the Web Team. I remember Achronos telling us one point for his justification to not allow custom avatars. He said when they were first designing the site, genitalia was already appearing as avatars on the boards. Mind you, that would have bee before the site was available for public use, which would mean Bungie themselves were already abusing it. Which...is kind of expected I suppose, but still a valid justification.

I hope Bungie warms up to the idea of custom avatars at some point, but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

While avatars can be abused, I believe you don't understand the real reasoning behind it.

First of all, people can't ask for likes on Bungie. That doesn't even make sense. Not to mention that many successful online communities have custom avatars. I don't see why you associate custom user images with Facebook, because the practice of using them had existed long before social networking was even a term.

And genitalia or other "nasty parts" in avatars has never been a big issue on any online community the allows custom user images. This is because it's easy to enforce such things.

Also, you can't "attach" a virus to a regular image file. Learn how the Internet works...

The real issues behind custom avatars is the massive amounts of avatars that would be uploaded to Bungie's servers. Although this would cause nearly the amount of trouble animated GIFs would cause when attempting to load a thread.

My question is why try to fix a system that's worked perfectly for so many years?
