Just a suggestion guys.
I think instead of ranking they should use the basic levels that you see at the start of the campaign. What i mean is you should get the option to state what sort of level you see yourself at before you enter each game and THEN get matched up.

ranked between 1-10 then your at BEGINNER, 11-15 = EASY, 16-22 = AVERAGE, 23-29 =
GOOD and so on and so on...your ranking is not shown but you should already know what level you play at from halo2 XBL. Would / Could stop a lot of things thats so wrong with XBL at the moment. For example there would be no reason to de-level ? Also people wouldn't get obsessed with that silly number by there name.
So here i am, im online waiting to play some games....i choose say team slayer...i then get the options, i choose easy or average and then you go through the motions of getting matches up with people who have also chosen EASY or AVERAGE. Yeah for sure you'll get people in the wrong category to start with but if it were me id get bored pretty easily choosing beginner. Think about it guys n gals, what you think.

Not a good idea then why would you play matchmaking, then you can beat the game and be done with it, if they do this, then if they make a matchmaking there would be no ranking system which would make the halo franchise like any other game you beat it and then your done with it, not many people would still be playing the campaign.

No because there are people out there (like me) who like to ruin people's fun. Sometimes I go into Team Hardcore to just be a dick to my teammates. If your "solution" was used, I would go into MM as a beginner and just murder all the tiny tim's out there.

I usd to play the Cairo station's hard spots just as practice for Live. And I'm a 28.

My friend, who I can beat pretty badly, finished legendary.

There are guys massively better than me, and I can tell you they definatly beat legendary.

Because of these points, there would be way too many people in the "Legendary" catagory for this set up to work.

NO. Leave the ranks, please..I hate cheaters, and I've lost rank because of them, but I don't want to lose the ranking system because of them.

You see, people seem to have such a nasty little grudge against just using public game servers like Counter-Strike and just about any other FPS in existence. I can only assume that this roots from Halo just HAVING to be different from every other game. Trust me, you cant make such a FPS. If it actually happened, we'd be playing with supersoakers on candyland maps. So really, play games like Counter-Strike and check out how awesome that kind of optimatch is. You can join any kind of game, no rankings, and you never have to be in a game/map that you dont like, and when you get bored of your favorite game, move on to the other types. As simple as Bungie's matchmaking, without the whiny rank whores and the games/maps you don't like. Oh, and the admins of the games can ban people from their server as well. That brings me to my next point. Modders wouldn't have to be caught with the banhammer tools, everyone could just ban them from the games. Community banhammer... sounds good to me.

I agree with snipa...but there are 2 things:

1) can you even host private dedicated servers with an sbxox (prolly not, but this could add to moneymaking for microsoft or bungie by letting u pay monthly for one...)

2) you could have BOTH. Go into the server list like CS, or do ranked matches like H2

yeah but hopefully halo3 won't have any cheaters online. i think the ranking makes the game too serious. It shouldn't be about that.
To the numb nut above he would go into the beginner mode and -blam!- everyone. How many people play online, i would take my chances that i wouldn't get in a match with ya and even if i did i could just quit and most likely you wouldn't be in my next one.

1. Ok, maybe I worded that wrong. It's not necessarily dedicated hosting, it's on Valve's servers, but you host your own rooms for those searching in optimatch to see on their list.

2. Rankings = -blam!-es, end of story. I don't care how high your level is. There's no difference from low to high rankings other than skill level, which isnt exactly balanced anyway. Trust me, I was once a 33, and then a 29 because the 9 maps came out and modding went nuts. And why? Guess what, Ranks.

EDIT - Did I say modding? I meant the amount of idiots with a modchip, a toolbox and patches. Real modders don't cheat.
