These Bungie employees commenting make it sound so easy. I would imagine that Bungie probably gets 100 applications a week even when they're not hiring. Making something that stands out... What does that mean? In this day and age making a program is very easy with a college class or two. It's the people with something extra that get hired... With a week or two in college you can make a basic version on pong. With four years, you can go into a professional job. Nowadays the people getting hired are the ones who have been working on programming since they had the ability to buy their first software building programs. It's a very unlikely chance to get into Bungie without a quality that nobody else can offer. Whatever you decide to make has to be something as un-copyable as can be. Something completely new. It's hard.
