Subject: Adding value to an account.

Are you satisfied with the things we have right now that add a special value to our accounts? Titles, linked tags for emblem and models as avatars....

Would you like to see something new?

If you were in charge of making that call to add features to the site what would you add and why?

Spread the love...

Somehow add custom avatars.

More group slots.

Be able to cancel group join-queue's.

Bye.

The main problem I believe is the ease of account making. Because you can create lots of alt accounts fairly easily, lots of users don't get directly attached to an account, so they use them as junk accounts (spamming, rule breaking, name calling, taking my mother out for dates and not calling her back!).

Currently there's very little difference between an account created right this second and an account that's 7 years old, asides from a different title, color and the ability to create groups. There is very little reason for a user to keep on one account other than handiness and etiquette.

Credit-card authorization is an idea that I have thrown out before but because this site is for anyone over 13, this would alienate the 13-18(or 20 depending on the country/state) age bracket, the primary age of the gaming market. Unless the parents input their credit card details? Not many parents would leave their kids with their credit card details on the internet though.

A thought just occurred to me. My account has been paired with a mobile device for the bungie app. Why not have mobile pairing a requirement to make an account? Most people have a mobile phone and few people have multiple phones so this could be a possible idea reduce the number of alt accounts and, in-turn, spam. The people without phones- Yes, they exist- might have a little bother creating an account though.

Until the day comes where you can trade-in your title for money, accounts on BNet will never have any value to me.

  • 05.20.2012 12:38 PM PDT

The only thing I would like is a cancel join group option for the ones that require approval, that way you won't get stuck waiting.

It should be the user that gives the account value, not the website.

All these spam prevention features people propose would impede the regular userbase more than it would trolls and spammers. Frankly, I'm opposed to giving out credit, billing, or phone information unless I'm making some sort of transaction. In the spectrum of security and privacy, I prefer privacy.

  • 05.20.2012 12:41 PM PDT

To cancel join-in queues and possibly have more slots for joining private groups would be nice.

That's the problem with major account changes. Anything effecting Sign-up necessities is going to challenge some normal users. :-(

So would you say that account rewards and perks are the way to go for adding value?

Only regret is I didn't play more of it.

This should be a standard. Also, it's queue.

While linking an account to a mobile device would work with the majority of users on the site, it would prevent somebody from joining the site who didn't have a mobile. Yes, it would prevent multiple accounts, but it could also prevent well intentioned new users from joining because they either didn't have a cell phone or don't trust random websites with their phone numbers.

As you said, that is still going to be alienating people such as myself who do not have a smart phone. What if linking a gamertag was required? It won't completely solve the problem, but it's another annoying step for someone making alt accounts.

And to answer the OP, there's really nothing I can think of adding. But a lot of people seem to want the ability to cancel pending group requests, so why not add it in?

The problem with requiring a linked gamertag is that not everybody who plays Bungie games plays them online.

I know that would cause a problem for users without phones, like Spar7anb.

PSN network names and Gamertags made mandatory for sign-up? Possibly. What about users that don't have online though? They need to be able to create an account to.

You first have to weigh how many people you are affecting because they are new to the site over how many people are trying to circumvent bans using alternate accounts. Is the ratio less than, or more than 1? Even if it's less than is it right to restrict people from accessing this site due to making external choices which don't even relate to it; like purchasing a mobile devise which can use the Bungie application?

This is a negative approach to the situation; imposing harsher restrictions becomes no where near as effective as adding more "value" to an account over time.

It's all great, but I think more motivation is needed. Unlocking new avatars with each title upgrade would be neat, or get some new handy-dandy forum privileges.

That's an awesome idea. I would LOVE that feature. It would give me a reason to look at the avatars page again, even though I love my current avatar. (Even got a shirt with it on it.)

Or maybe let us use our XBL gamer pictures as avatars, maybe just the official ones if they can find a way to do that.
