Who the hell do you think I am?

If it were me I would get a 660ti.

And then we could also play Borderlands 2 together :D
The 670 would be a better investment.
Yes, but I was just saying when comparing it to the 7850, I would get the 660.

I dont even recognize some of those parts.

Because it's a laptop from 2005.

Laptops have different form factors

From what I see there on internals, there's a:
Motherboard
Processor
Slim DVD Drive
2.5 HDD
Wireless adapter
Heatsink

RAM is there as well. I will admit that it's a bit tricky to make it out in the picture.

I just thought it was under the motherboard

Yeah my concern was the price. I hope to do some heavy overclocking with either an i7-3770K or simply an i5-3570K (not sure if I'm going to be using hyperthreading or not yet). Currently my budget is sitting around $1600 so a mid to high end build. What about the H80? I'd like to keep it quiet, but I suppose savings from getting a Noctura could be used in other areas.

Posted by: PMC Fluffy
It has a horrible price-to-efficiency ratio, meaning that you can get a cheaper air cooler that makes your CPU cooler, like the Noctua NH-D14. Hell, most custom water cooling loops don't do much more than huge heatsinks. The whole point of watercooling is either aesthetics, cooling in a smaller package, or being silent. If you have the money, get the H100. If not, buy a 212+ on a budget, or perhaps the C14 if you want something smaller.

The H80 is too much money for its performance, but the H100 is more reasonable. I would go with the i7 2600k over the i7-3770k. Although it doesn't have x32 bandwidth for PCIe-3, it can overclock much higher. As for the 2500k vs 3570k, I usually recommend the Ivy because overclocking isn't as much of an issue with its TIM.

A quick build I threw together.

The PSU leaves you room to SLI in the future. I also left $200 open in case you wanted a monitor, a legit OS (lol), keyboard, mouse, thermal paste (stock on the H100 is good), mousemat, speakers, soundcard, SSD, different case (600T, HAF X) etc.

Also, unles you do a TON of video editing, recording at 1600p, or run 40 instances of CS6, you probably don't need an i7. If you're doing more than gaming, or simply want it for a 0.1 or 0.2 GHz higher overclock, go for it.

A different example with a modular PSU, SLI 660 Ti, different case, an i5, a 212+, and an SSD.

The 7850? The most equivalent AMD card to the 660 Ti would be the 7870.

I'm also having difficulty choosing a card... My build has a GTX 670 but I'm always into cost cuts.

I've just gotten a 1.5 TB HDD as a gift, just over a week ago I spent 70 on a 250GB which I will now return.

I can Return it and upgrade CPU, GPU, or get my new 2D/3D Monitor.

My CPU is an i3 2100 and I have 2 GPUs, a GTX 550 Ti and a GT 440.

I could return the CPU or GPU to upgrade. If I do I'd have about 120 plus the cost of what I'm upgrading.

If I upgrade GPUs I'll have about 240 for upgrading it. If I return the CPU I'll have about 220 to upgrade it.

Should I upgrade or just keep the money for my monitor?

Also a 21.5 Inch Monitor with these Features:

High Quality Stereoscopic 3D Display
The 3D filter on the LCD panel and 3D glasses are designed to compensate perfectly and create a stereoscopic optical image with reduced eye strain and clear high quality stereoscopic display

Worth buying at $147?

Oh thanks Fluffy, I actually already have much of my build already completed and purchased. (for some reason it doesn't have my SeaSonix X750W on pcpartpicker). All I've got left to purchase are the most expensive components (mobo, GPU, CPU, and the CPU cooler).

In regards to the i7, I would like to do some work with my PC beyond simple gaming, and if Microcenter has a good combo deal going on I might spring for it. Otherwise I'm just sticking with the an i5.

I can get a 7950 for an equivalent of $353. Should I go for it?

It's the Sapphire OC edition. Looks like an unbeatable deal, considering the price of the 660 Ti sold here...

the flood, there a bunch of jerks, but there my jerks.

I have been wondering, how much of a difference does RAM make? Say I have a nice build with a 3770K OC'd to 4.5 GHz. How much of a difference is there between DDR3-2666 with a CAS Latency of 7 and DDR3-1600 with a CAS Latency of 9, and where would I see the differences in performance?

  • 09.04.2012 2:02 PM PDT

Who the hell do you think I am?

Depends, what're you doing with that much power?

It's also a good way to kill those components faster.

Well, what exactly are you doing that you need this increase in performance? You need to be more specific than just "an increase in performance"

Having this made as a gift for someone I know, they aren't looking to max out Metro 2033 on triple screens, but play recent games on medium-high.

i3 2120
8GB RAM
Radeon 6850

+ case, PSU, HDD etc. (Mostly cheap stuff). Came to about £370/$590, decent build for the price?

  • 09.04.2012 4:48 PM PDT

Hurr

Make sure the PSU isn't a cheap one

Amount of RAM > CAS latency > RAM speed.

8GB of RAM is the most you would ever need, even when running servers, unless you run a triple monitor setup and use a lot of media programs that can use more than 2GB of RAM for that program. CAS latency generally only changes loading times by a tenth of a second, whereas an SSD would cut loading times in half. Anything above 1600 speed causes Intel chips to actually slow down in some aspects with no real world benefits.

Get an Antec NEO ECO 520W. That's as cheap as you should get before you sacrifice the safety of your system. I've heard bad stories about the Corsair Builder series, which isn't even that efficient in terms of power anyway.

It was on a really tight budget and wanted to put as much towards a decent GPU as I could. But thanks, that graph was actually pretty helpful.

Went on YouTube and someone requested a computer shop for a LGA2011 Intel Core i7 machine with quad, dare I say it? Quad GTX 550 Tis.

And they are not even in SLi. I'm not entirely sure of the reasoning behind this.

That's why i asked, 20 bucks is a big difference if you're on a budget. Still at 169 it might be worth considering.
