I purchased it like nearly two years ago. ($850) I'm not really looking to replace it with a new gaming laptop anyway though, but rather build a desktop. After all I've spent nearly a thousand thus far on components and the like.

Ah....should have bought that Lenovo I linked. If it's not too late...try to get a refund on what you what you have, and get that Lenovo instead. This way you can still have some cash in your pockets.

Well....what are the specs and what was the price of your laptop?

He he he. I'm pretty much done with ordering stuff. Just got the expensive parts left (CPU, CPU cooler, mobo, and GPU). By any chance do you use a Noctua?

Never heard of it. The only companies that I would buy parts from are Newegg, NCIX, Amazon, Micro Center, CompUSA (Tiger Direct), and....I think that's it.

I may be missing 1 or 2 trsuted and well known companies though.

Don't worry about it much, It's a card in the 7900 series, if it were 7870, it would be recognized as 7800 series and 6750, 6700 and so on.

General question for all of you guys that posted your build, anything you'd strongly suggest having or avoiding at all costs? Regrets, mistakes, that sort of thing.
Research, research, research. Of course, in a month, your computer could already be out of date unless you get the best stuff at the time, so don't spend so much time moping about your mistakes, and instead enjoy what you have.

[url=http://iggyhopper.dyndns.org/gm/extensions/coup_d_bungie _4.crx[/url]

Before I buy this, I would like to know how this build looks. Of course I am aiming for it to be a gaming PC.

Case - Rosewill CHALLENGER Black

Processor - AMD FX-4100 Zambezi 3.6GHz

Motherboard - GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD

RAM - G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL

DVD/CD Drive - LITE-ON 24X DVD Writer Black (probably only going to use it to install the OS)

HDD - Seagate Barracuda ST31000524AS 1TB 7200 RPM

Graphics Card - EVGA 012-P3-1570-AR GeForce GTX 570

PSU - Rosewill Xtreme Series RX750-S-B 750W (The calculator put my build in at 540w, but it's probably best to have some leeway)

OS - Windows 7 Home Premium

This came up to $787.

This will be my first build, just want to have feedback on it's performance and compatibility with the items.

Weed, 750 watts is a lot more than you're going to be needing. Those calculators will give you leeway to begin with (though I usually like to go fifty over. 600 Watt or so will do. What calculator did you use anyway?

I used the one on newegg.

Let me find a new PSU.

Also, what would happen if my power supply is way over, just for future reference.

Case: Good for the price.

CPU and Mobo: The CPU and mobo together are $260, and you could get an i3 and AsRock for that price, and even less with a combo.

RAM: Upgrade the RAM to Ripjaws X, since there's no extra cost, unless this is already part of a combo.

Optical: Fine, although I think the ASUS one looks cooler from the outside.

HDD: There isn't a huge difference between 32 and 64mb cache, but the later often has better combos (and is $20 more though).

GPU: That's only $50 away from the 660 Ti, which trumps the 570. I'm no Radeon fanboy, but the 7870 would be better for the $250 price point.

PSU: I would suggest a different PSU as well, since that one isn't modular or very efficient. A NEO ECO would power that build fine, but you could also get a SeaSonic, which is arguably the best PSU brand out there.

OS: I'm not a fan of buying them, but if you feel like throwing away $100, that's cool ;)

So yeah, the major components would be getting a better CPU and PSU, but everything else would have been fine. Don't forget to check all of the Newegg combos.

Example combos:

Case and RAM
Better case and HDD
CPU and RAM

You also need a CPU cooler if you get the i3, since Intel stock is terribad. Get the Cooler Master Hyper 212+ for $30.

Nothing. It's just not necessary for your build.

I'm having some over heating problems...

Well, kind of. I bought a Hyper 212+ CPU cooler about a month ago, and installed it. It brought my average CPU temp down from 54C to 40C.

The stock CPU cooler NEVER went above 59C while under extreme load. And for the first three weeks, the Hyper 212+ never went above 45C under full load, but all of a sudden, it's averaging around 55C.... which is slightly higher than the stock cooler was.

What the heck is happening? I checked the case: No dust build up. All fans are working. No wires in the way. I manually adjusted fan speed to 100% and it makes no difference. The airflow is great too.

What the heck is going on?

My CPU, according to AMD, can only safely get up 62C, and 59C is cutting it very close.

There are two possibilities. One is that you did not screw the backplate / heat sink on tight enough and it has come loose, or you screwed them incorrectly (alternating diagonally, with three to seven rotations each time). The other is that you applied the thermal paste incorrectly, and as it is heated over time, it is unequally distributing the heat.

Watch this just in case.

I actually applied new thermal paste with the Hyper 212+, and I did spread it very carefully and evenly as I possibly could.

I used some special stuff (thermal paste remover stuff, artic)to remove the old thermal paste. I also didn't mention it in my other post, but I did check the back plate and made sure everything was snug and that it was tightened in.

And one other thing: I actually just replaced the 120mm fan for the Hyper 212+ because the one it came with started squealing after two weeks. The new fan is the exact same model and size.

I'm starting to think the cooler is bad.

  • 09.11.2012 9:06 PM PDT

MLP: FiM Master Moderator: | Homepage | My Steam Profile | My Computer |

I'm not sure exactly how a cooler itself can be bad. The only ways that it can be faulty are if the backplate itself is malformed, or if the fan speeds aren't kicking in at higher temps. Try removing the side of the case and placing a fan near it to see if it changes the temps. If that doesn't solve anything, then your airflow is fine, and it's either the paste itself, the CPU, possibly the PSU distributing the wrong voltages (higher voltage = higher temps), or something else.

Forgive my inexperience, but this is my first time that I ever have a proper graphics card in my possession.

What's the average GPU temperature during gaming? I live in a tropical country with high humidity so there's a bit of a concern.
