Been considering an SSD, not sure if its worth the extra cash. I have 3 Drives already, 2 250GB and a 1.5TB Drive. An SSD would be for speed, but is it really that much of a difference?

What is the maxium amount of RAM my Motherboard could handle?
I have 8 GB and I'm planning in the future adding another 8GB.
My motherboard is H77-DS3H by Gigabyte.
Your motherboard supports up to 32GB of RAM, which is typical for most mainstream boards.

Reference.
Thanks.
Another question, Can I also add another 1TB Hard Drive(not external)
I have 1 TB and I'm just wondering.
But thank you for clearing these up. ^^

As long as you have a spare SATA port on your motherboard, you can always have more HDDs.

Not that the other hardware can actually utilize it properly.
I always think anything above 8GBs is an absolute overkill, unless you're doing some really serious video editing.

I have 2 SATA ports which are open, then I'm good. Thanks! :D

Even that has a hard time hitting 8GB without an SSD.

You can set up RAID if it's necessary.

I have a SSD + 8GBs of RAM, the most I've seen used up is 2.3GBs.

RAID is fiddly, I don't know too much about it.

Plus, there's a risk of complete data loss if one drive goes kaputt in a RAID0 array.

I don't recommend RAID0

It's not necessary at this point since you've already built your computer. If you got one, you'd have to reinstall Windows and your programs. It'll be better to wait for a new OS or SSD price drops to get one.

Who the hell do you think I am?

So if I got second HDD, I could just plug it into the motherboard and use it right? (obviously while the machine is off)

Like, if I wanted to I could just bring my HDD over to a friend's house with all my data on it and plug it into his computer if I wanted to?

If his computer supports it

Obviously...

What I was asking if anything software wise needs to happen so it can communicate with the OS.

Lots of this...
I have never been a fan or raid configurations.

Nothing

It just pops up on your "my computer" menu like a USB drive.

you will need to configure the volume before use if its brand new, you can do that in disk management other than that once its formatted it should be plug and play.

I've done simulations of raid configuration, it's pretty complicated. I'd recommend using a large USB volume instead. If you don't know what you're doing you might mess up his computer and your HDD.

All you need to do is enable RAID in the BIOS, not that hard. The only way RAID can damage your system is just by using it, because they're more likely to fail.

<3 THE SALTY CHIP

I haven't done those simulations in 4 months so I didn't want to tell you anything because it might have messed you up. I'm going to start learning outside of my class so I can help others.

Just be careful of OS problems.

  • 09.14.2012 1:32 PM PDT

Who the hell do you think I am?

The only way I see RAID messing up your OS is if you pick the wrong RAID function, but ok.

And it's very easy to distinguish which RAID function you're using. In the end I wouldn't use it anyway, mostly for organizational purposes.

Not that you're doing anything major by just plugging in your HDD into a friend's computer but if I was doing something different with an HDD for the first time, I'd probably back it up before I use it. Anything could go wrong.

for the record, I don't just correct any grammar mistakes, only "You're" and "Your". That one particularly grinds my gears.

I wasn't defeated, you just took what I said and said it back, and it makes no sense in the context you said it in, and I had nothing else to say on that matter. I'm not going to continue this because this thread isn't for that sort of thing, or any other thread for that matter.

I need a PC build that will be good for the -blam!- load of video editing I will be doing. Also, my budget is $2,000. Any help?

Buy two 1000 dollar PCs, and send one to me :D

Anyways, I'll give you a build...

Z77-DS3H
32GB RAM (because why not?)
i7 3770k
ZOTAC GTX 680 2GB
Thermaltake Level 10 GT Snow Edition Full Tower
Rosewill LIGHTNING Series LIGHTNING-1000 1000W PSU
BluRay Drive
Seagate 3TB HDD
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit
Thermaltake CLP0598 92mm Contact 16 CPU Cooler
TP-LINK TL-WN951N Wireless N Adapter (Give your Desktop Wifi :D)

It come out to $1,976.39

One heck of a build, you can make toast with it.
Oh yeah and the GPU brings Borderlands 2.
Windows 7 Home Premium can only use 16 gigs you fool! He will need at least professional!
