Does anyone here know if i can use a i5 3570K with a Asus P8Z68 motherboard right off the bat or if i need to use a sandy bridge in order to update the BIOS for it to work?

Pretty sure that you'll need to flash update the BIOS first. I could be wrong though...

Yes, you'll need a newer BIOS version.

Rev. 3402 is the latest with Ivy Bridge support. And you'll have to reference the board manual for the BIOS update process as it doesn't support ASUS' EZ BIOS Flashback.

Thanks for the answer. I already suspected as much, shame i didn't go for a P8Z77 when i had the chance, could have avoided all this. Besides the Ivy Bridge support, what are the other differences between the Z68 and the Z77 chipsets, specially anything that changes the overclocking in any way?

The only difference I'm aware of is that the Z77 chipset has a built-in USB 3.0 controller.

That's not a feature exclusive to the chipset, USB3 has been around for a while.

Different chipsets have no performance difference outside of overclockeing, you only really need to worry about what kind of chipset you're using if you're planning on overclocking, and even then, there aren't that many advantages between 2 motherboards that support the same processor.

Then,if that is the case, it's definitely not worth the extra 150 euros over the Z68.

Since it is a unlocked CPU, it would be a waste not overclocking it even if not by much(mainly due to the exponential increase in temperature the more you push it).

Heat will not exacerbated if you install an aftermarket heatsink cooler.

--

What I meant about the built-in USB 3.0 controller is that the chipset controls some USB 3.0 ports, in previous chipsets this is accomplished via a 3rd party chipset (ASmedia etc.) but motherboard OEMs are free to throw in additional USB 3.0 ports with a 3rd party chip.

I would just like a 2nd opinion on this....

On my PC build, should I go with an unlocked, or "locked" CPU? I don't think i'll be doing any over clocking....and if I did, it wouldn't be anything too major.

Buying a "locked" CPU would save me a bit of money that can potentially go towards a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO (after market CPU cooler).

I'm running off a Intel Core i5 3470 for he sole reason that I'm not planning to overclock the CPU.

I'm also using the stock heatsink, temps are acceptable (a bit higher due to higher ambient temperature, tropical country). Could've gone for the Corsair watercooling solutions.

Well, if you don't intend to over clock, then I would suggest going with the locked CPU with the 212.

But aren't those coolers only like $20~?

Locked: you can't overclock and unlocked:...well you get the idea. In your case a locked CPU might be best.

I'm not "hardcore" enough for water cooling yet...lol.

I just don't feel like messing with it. I'll probably fill my case up with fans though.

So....i'm assuming that you think I should go with a "locked" CPU then?

Ok

And yes, the Hyper 212 EVO is in the $20's somewhere. It's a great after market CPU cooler from what I hear.

Not exactly that hardcore but relatively pricey.

If you're not planning to overclock, I'd suggest a locked CPU. It's a waste to get an unlocked processor with no overclocks.

I was referring to a water cooled CPU and it's not necessary to have a complete system in order to have your CPU cooled by that method.

Is an after market cooler really necessary though if you get a locked CPU? I thought the supplied cooler was plenty sufficient if you didn't OC.

Well, if you think about it you need the fan for the CPU to function, since the fan extracts the heat from the CPU. If the fans weren't sufficient enough, they wouldn't be selling them. They're just loud is all.

That is, if you're not overclocking of course. Otherwise you would want a cooler, which you can find a very good one for $30 (cooler master 212)

An aftermarket cooler is always better than the stock heatsink. I use the Intel heatsink fan and the noise emanating from it is managable.

Intel's stock fans are actually among the quietest while still providing room for OCing

It is. Very inaudible during gaming.

But definitely not advisable for overclocking.
