So I'm thinking about hooking up a second monitor, but I'm not sure what resolutions that will allow me to use seeing as how I've never had a dual monitor setup before. Both have a native res of 1080p and both are about the same size screen (22 inches) so I'm guessing you just multiply the pixel width by 2? The second monitor is mostly just so that I have more space to work with when I'm using autoCAD, but it would be nice if I could run BF3 and other games across both screens at decent FPS as well.
I'm also going to assume my good ol' 460 wouldn't be able to handle BF3 on high at that increased resolution (anything above 1080p), so now I'm looking around to see which cards can handle a dual monitor setup w/ BF3 at high-ultra at reasonable frame rates (60~fps). I'm not going to run out and get a card asap, I'd just like to know what my options are in terms of video cards that would suit this setup, not looking for anything overkill here.
tl;dr - for a dual monitor 1080p setup what resolution would it end using to span across both monitors? And do I need a beastly card so I can still get max fps in games and also game at the increased resolution?
Sorry if this sounds wordy I'm having trouble explaining this for some reason lol.
Just times the resolution width by 2, you won't get increased resolution in games, or at least most games. In few instances, you can use it as sort of a split-screen, but you need software. Screen size can be as arbitrary as you want, you can even have 2 monitors of different sizes in pixels, but for the actual physical size, you can have a projector as the second monitor and it wouldn't matter.
Games won't display for a very specific reason on a dual monitor setup; It's really retarded to block the center if your screen. Which is why there will be one screen that's free to do other stuff, so you won't have to mess with steam overlay or alt+tab.
