Speeds are quite limited here, the fastest my ISP is offering is 20 mb/s. I'm on a 10 mb/s line.

Will a non-80 Plus Certified PSU be ok to use in a home theater/media center PC?

I'll make sure to get it from a good brand...

Ehhh. I'd still always go with a bronze atleast. May just be me though.

I would too. Wouldn't mind a more efficient PSU.

Ya, I know. A non-80 plus would be even cheaper though.

How is this media center PC build that I put together? I am adding in a TV tuner, which is $100 or so.

I wanted to keep it relatively cheap (i'll be buying those parts on Black Friday), and i'm just looking for a 2nd opinion on this build.

Anything that could be swapped around while keeping the build relatively cheap?

  • 09.23.2012 12:41 PM PDT

Hurr

For a home media PC, I doubt you'd need 8GB of RAM or a $100 motherboard.

Also, the case looks worryingly small. As in fry your PC small. Does it even have a fan slot?

  • 09.23.2012 1:53 PM PDT

Who the hell do you think I am?

You could definitely get a cheaper motherboard for that build. Maybe throw in like a 6570 as well.

For the RAM, I only wanted to add 4GB of RAM into it, but for some odd reason, PC part picker would only show that RAM and some Corsair RAM when I had that motherboard selected.

As for the motherboard, the was the cheapest LGA 1155 socket microATX motherboard. I wanted to get a microATX motherboard because I wanted to fit everything into a small case.

The case may be too small for me to add in a video card.

I dunno....I may just build this media center the size of a regular PC. I wanted to make it small and compact to save room in the home theater room.

This is more of a general PC question.

My father is needing a school computer (pretty much a Facebook and Microsoft word machine in essence), and he's thinking of this one he found on Craigslist. Thoughts? Anything we should check or test? Laptops ain't my thing.

For only $150, it's hard to beat. Just make sure to clean it out once you get it.

  • 09.23.2012 2:12 PM PDT

Yeah that's what I told my father. Is there anything we should look for or test? *currently using google to find that answer*

I'd assume throw in a really cheap GPU(7770), because I've heard there can be issues with Intel's integrated GPU drivers, but that's just me.

I got these cheeseburgers man....

Alright guys, it's coming up to the time where I start making my birthday/Christmas list, so I need to start finalizing what my builds gonna be. This is what I put together. Right now, the 3450 is on sale for $149 at my local Microcenter, but I was wondering if I should just get an i3, since I could put more money towards the GPU. Would the i3 being only dual core really matter? I chose the 912 because I like how it looks, but I'll take other recommendations for cases priced equally but better.

Also, what's the best modular PSU for around the same price of the PSU I chose. And, would it be worth it to get a cheaper HDD with less storage to put more money towards the GPU, and just add in another drive at a later date?

Hurr

I'd keep the 3450. You might be able to slightly OC the GPU, but it's a reference design so don't push it.

Urgh, non-painted interior and a mesh plate only. I think NZXT Phantom 410s are a similar price, and they look better IMO.

Most fully modular power supplies I find are 1000W+ and really expensive. That OCZ is probably the best for the price.

Keep the 1TB, the GPU is amazing as it is. Besides, I doubt you'd save enough to get a non-reference 670.

You're ordering two power supplies. Are you sure that you want to do that?

Also, iGPU's will run movies and such at slower framerates than dGPU's, so keep that in mind. Grab a cheaper motherboard as well, like this or this.

Everything else checks out.

If he doesn't mind only being able to have 2 or 3 tabs open and can wait 5 minutes for his computer to boot, then it'll work fine. Here is a desktop alternative that you might want to consider.

$300 seems like the best amount of money to put into it.

I checked on the Phantom 410s and they're all $100.

I've never understood what it means to be a reference GPU. Care to explain?
