Just came up with a much better build for around or less than $100 more.....and i'm still adding in that TV tuner.

Sure it's bigger....but now that I think about it....it's definitely worth it.

@suicde

A reference GPU is a design based off of ATI or Nvidia's default cooling system. A non-ref GPU is something with its own cooling design.

For example, MSI's twin frozr and Asus' DirectCU designs are both non-reference GPU's

I got these cheeseburgers man....

So would it be worth it to spend the extra $50 or so for a non-reference?

  • 09.23.2012 5:05 PM PDT

Hurr

I'd say yes. You can overclock the GPU further and achieve near 680 frame rates. It's also cooler and quieter (mostly).

Hm. I'm really pushing the budget right now, so do you see anywhere in here that I could cut down on?

Processor, video card, monitor.

A semi-modular PSU or a different monitor?

I actually meant cut down so I could get a better 670, should have been more specific.

Yes

Get this version of the 670 instead. It's $10 cheaper.

Get this monitor instead. It's $20 cheaper.

Get this optical drive instead. It's about $10 cheaper.

Get this RAM instead. It's $3 cheaper and better.

Pick up this aftermarket CPU cooler while you're at it.

Do I really need the CPU cooler if I don't plan on overclocking? I thought we just had a discussion about how Intel's stock cooler was good.

Now the hard part is convincing my step mom that my relatives should give me money and not (physical) gifts, because for some reason she firmly believes that I shouldn't ask for money as a gift. I'll need to money to pool it together to buy stuff.

I'm loving dual monitors so far, but now I only hear audio on the left side. Guess I'll need to grab some speakers or just using my vengeance 1500 if I wan't to game.

Who the hell do you think I am?

The reference card is fine. The only problem with non-reference cards is that most of the time they're huge, and there might be some problems fitting it in if the case is too small.

And there isn't a point in overclocking your card if it's a 670 or 680 because both of those can already run all current games at 60 FPS or higher, so unless you have a 120Hz monitor or you are running the game on more than one monitor (in which case you would want more than one GPU) then you are risking the life-span of your card for no noticeable increase in performance.

The Intel HSF is bad, and anyone who says otherwise hasn't owned both that and an actual HSF. On my i7, the stock HSF gave me temps of 60*C under idle. With my 212+, I barely broke 50*C under full load. With my H100, I almost never go above 30*C.

Regardless of overclocking, your CPU will generally perform better with less heat.

I have this on my desktop and the CPU idles at around 34C and never goes above 60C when playing games.

The Intel HSF keeps your CPU from going over 100*C, but when you can spend $20 to cut the temps in half, why wouldn't you?

If you're talking about his post and mine, I was talking about the cooler on GPUs, he's talking about CPUs. The stock intel fan is bad.

I guess you're right.

So, you recommend going with the 212 EVO then? Or any other cheap CPU cooler you can recommend?

Any of the CM 212 series is good. The 212 Plus is $20 after rebate and is pretty much the same, sans a fan. I haven't compared their temps to each other, but here is a benchmark that I found.

  • 09.23.2012 6:29 PM PDT

While we're on the topic of HSFs, does anyone have any exoerience with Noctuas?
