Waiting for Sapphire's Vapor-X 7970 GE to come back in stock. In the mean time, are any of you aware of comparable cards? I'm going to be running multiple monitors so I'm not interested in any 680s.

I got these cheeseburgers man....

What's so special about the Vapox-X version?

Buy the 670. It's more powerful than the 7970 according to Passmark's benchmarks.

Plus, you can picky up a 670 for around $360....sometimes. Prices change every day.

Eh, is there a 670 that has 3GB of vRAM? I intend to do a multiple monitor set-up in addition to crossfire/SLI so I don't want to be shackled to just 2GB of vRAM. Personally I'm more of an AMD fanboy.

That's the GHz Edition...I was referring to the regular version.

Well....i'm just trying to help you save some money, but 2GB of VRAM should be plenty. The 670 is capable of doing up to 3 monitors on a single 670 card.

Oh apologies. The card I am currently looking at is a Ghz edition. My only regret with it is the custom PCB so I won't be able to utilize a GPU waterblock on it without some difficulty.

As for the 670, thank you. : ) My price point is around $450, and despite the diminishing returns on that high end of the spectrum I'm willing to go that high (heck, Tom's Hardware said as much). Are there any comparable nVidia cards with similar OCing ability? Unfortunately my price point is smack dab between the 670 and the 680, so either I'll be getting an over-priced 670 or a weak 680.

The 7970 GE sits right around the price point and power I'm looking for. I suppose what I was looking for were other cards such Gigabyte's 7970 GE.

Hurr

The 7970 will be much better for mulit-monitor displays due to its higher memory bus. It's also a great card and will blast through games with ease.

It ain't modular, but if you can deal with that I'd say yay.

This. In general, pick AMD for multimonitor on one card, and nVidia if you're only using one monitor or plan to SLI with multiple monitors.

@Kez; If you don't mind a ton of useless cables, go for it. If you have to use Tigerdirect as opposed to Newegg.ca, you won't be able to get SeaSonic, and their high-end Corsair are like twice the price.

Modular version of the TX series, but I'm not sure why it's the same price as the non-modular one. OCZ would be cheaper, but not as reliable. Those are your two choices pretty much with TD.

Modular: You can plug only the cables you need into the PSU

Non-modular: All the cables are fixed to the PSU, any that you don't need will have to be tucked away somewhere

well i'm mainly in the market for a new one because i need more cables lol. my psu only has two 6 pin pci-e while i would need an extra two for sli. the 12v rail(s) also need to support over 550 watts because my cpu is overclocked and i would like to over clock the cards as well.

A modular PSU has detachable cables so you can insert only the ones you need. Thus resulting in a neater build as well as better cable management.

Who the hell do you think I am?

Speaking of PSUs, this one I just got says it's SLI ready but it only has two PCI-e connectors. Can anyone explain that? Wouldn't I need four of them for at least two GPUs?

@Kez OCZ is a pretty trusted brand, and it's fully modular. I'd go for it.

@Salty I think that if a GPU supplies you with a two-6 pin connector, they're both attached to one PCI-e cable.
I think.

Salty, he lives in Canada. He can't use Newegg.com. As for that PSU, SLI ready =/= having four PCIe cords. It only means that it supports two cards.

  • 09.24.2012 3:44 PM PDT

I wasn't saying he should buy it, I was just asking the question.

So do you not need two cords for each card you have then? I'm not seeing how it supports two cards. I was thinking you would need two PCI connectors for each one.

GPUs require two six pin connectors, or whatever. Those 2 are connected to one PCI-e connector.

That cable takes up one slot in the PSU and powers the GPU, the other slot is free for another one of those cables.

Capiche?
