HDDs from any brand are somewhat unpredictable. One person's HDD could last them several months while another person's could last them several years, and there isn't really a way to tell what will happen to yours. While companies make them better than other companies, even the most reliable companies still have failed drives here and there (which is why a lot of them offer 3-5 year warranties). The Seagate I have is still going fine. Western Digital, Samsung and Intel are good too.

This is an incredible step forward to being able to cure Downss sybndonre mn humans bineg.s

The cable connecting my headphone/mic jack on the front i/o panel of my case can barely get over my GPU to the correct place in the motherboard. Any advice for what to do about that, or should I not worry about it being that close to its surface?

Ah, OK. I guess I'll just buy whoever's the cheapest.

It's a dangerous business, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no telling where you might be swept off to.

I have never built a PC before so this is one of my first tries.

Tell me what you think.

I am mainly going for a gaming PC. I want to be able to play games like Planetside 2, BF3, DotA 2, Starcraft II, DayZ, Blacklight Retribution, Diablo III, Minecraft, and other games of that nature.

Some questions:

Is this build relatively future proof? Will I be able to play BF4 when it comes out in about a year?

Did I miss anything (compatibility issues, bottlenecking, etc.)?

Is there anything that I should be putting more/less money into? I would like to spend around $1000 for this PC.

Just in general, what do you think of this build?

Change the GPU to this (same card, better company)

And get this (better power supply)

Definitely get a bigger PSU, 460 leaves you little room to do anything. Especially if you plan on overclocking.

Same here as well.

You'll be lucky to get a discount for computer parts. NVIDIA cards seem to retain their pricing from release.

I actually have a similar problem. My cable has two connections on the end that connects to the motherboard, HD Audio, and AC'97. The AC '97 barely reaches, but the HD Audio can't reach at all.
Not a huge problem, but I haven't really seen any places that sell them separately. Even then, a longer one would probably be too long. =/

ASRock Z77 Extreme4. I thought that that's where it might go as well. In reality I can currently power the thing straight from the motherboard, but obviously I'm not going to be doing that the whole time I have it. I'm just afraid of firing the button itself somehow.
Posted by: THE SALTY CHIP
What is your motherboard?

It seems as though the Power SW goes on the last two prongs on the top row, The Reset SW goes on the last two prongs on the bottom row, the two power LEDs go on the first two prongs on the top row (+ on the left and - on the right) and the HDLEDs go on the first two prongs on the bottom row (again, + on the left and - on the right.

I'll see if I can. I went ahead and took the advice of another and plugged them into the seemingly "obvious" slots. Crossing my fingers.

Your manual seems to list them as PWRBTN# and REST#. I can't make out most of the headings in your picture of the actual board, but I certainly see a "reset" spot labelled on the board. Could you take another picture from a different angle of the board?

Imagine the video card as a motherboard; the CPU would be called the GPU. NVIDIA are the ones who make the GPUs, the other companies (ASUS, EVGA, MSI) are the ones who make the rest of the board.

I knew it was like this, I just wasn't aware of the distinct difference between the two names.

Oh hey, I saw your post on Reddit.

Anyway, yeah. I build a computer for my brother with a similar board (Z68 Extreme 3) and that's how we set up our front panel headers. After looking at your board and and manual it would seem to be that way too.

Those definitely fit. POWER SW will go on PWRBTN# and GND to the right of it, RESET SW will go on REST# with GND to the left of it.

I think AMD and Intel just make the CPU sockets, I'm not too sure though.

And I don't know about Galaxy and EVGA, but MSI and Gigabyte do make motherboards.

Salty Chip, you're right about the video card and GPU thing. The GPU itself is generally done by AMD or Nvidia, whereas the video card is manufactured by companies like Gigabyte, EVGA, Asus, MSI, etc.

And I'm pretty sure that Intel and AMD make the CPUs while those manufacturers make the motherboards (including the CPU sockets).
