GPU- The 680 is currently out of stock at Newegg. The 680 is only a little better than the 580 anyways. The benchmarks are so close that it's better to go with the 580.
Power supply
Wireless card- NOT necessary if you are going to use an ethernet cable.

BUILD PRICE WITHOUT WIRELESS CARD: $1,300.56 (WITH shipping)

BUILD PRICE WITH WIRELESS CARD: $1,345.56 (WITH shipping)

I was able to shave off $283.08 (I subtracted using the first build price).

I'm glad that I could help.

No problem. Also, because I know that you may bring this up, the reason why I didn't add in a CPU cooler is because the CPU in my build comes with one already. 95% of CPUs come with a CPU cooler with them, the other 5% are all old CPUs.

I know....that's because it's 450MBPs instead of the usual 150MBPs that usually comes with computers.

What would you rate this build on a scale of 1/100?

Mmmm like 85/100. Why do you want an aftermarket CPU cooler if you aren't going to overclock? Why no SSD? Other than than very good.

And I'm not too tech savy, but how are you going to run 4x RAM modules, and unless you do heavy video/photo editing 16GB RAM is wayy more than you need.

While we're on this topic how does my build look?

I had currently picked the 6870 for my GPU, but then I noticed the deal on that 6950. According to toms hardware's hierarchy and this website the 6950 is better, but is it worth the extra $30-50?

Sure, if you're willing to spend the extra money.

Most home connections don't go over 100, and the one I got for 15 dollars had a cap of 300Mbps :/

Okay so I keep noticing that people pick the Intel processors over the AMD processors all the time, because they say Intel processors have better performance
But look at the i5-2500k versus the Phenom II x4 965 Black Edition

The Intel i5 2500k
Versus
The Phenom II 965 Black
I mean is it just me or does the phenom have pretty much equivalent specs for half the price? It's making it hard for me to believe that an i5 is worth a hundred more. Especially since I'm trying to do the highest performance budget build possible.
So, flood. Are there performance capabilities that aren't being reflected on the specs on paper, or is everyone just hating on AMD because they've had a few bad products?
The 2500k performs better. It also idles around 10C lower, so it lasts longer, too. Intel's chips are just better quality overall. In your links you can see that the i5 is a 32nm chip, whereas the X4 is a 45nm one.
You can also see that the X4 chews up 30W more than the i5.
Can't argue when it comes to how cheap AMD's chips are, though.

8gb of RAM is worth it now days

The gtx 560 2gb is a bad buy as 2gb is pointless for 1920x1080 resolution and the power of the gtx 560. Use the money to get the gtx 560ti and 8gb of ram instead.

8GB is worth it, these days, that was just one of the first things I selected trying to make the rig as cheap as possible.

And that is a mistake on my part, I meant to add the GTX 560 Ti, it was right next to the 560 on the list. An extra GB of ram on the card isn't worth it in comparison to the extra power you'd get from the Ti for only $10 or so extra.

I will say though, the GTX 560 isn't "pointless" for a 1920x1080 resolution. Gaming or otherwise, it's not that far off the Ti.

  • 06.19.2012 6:44 AM PDT

No a 2gb gtx 560 is pointless as the extra VRAM will go to waste with no power increase

The 6950 is a better card than the 560 Ti and is cheaper.

Or you can go with the 480 which is ALMOST as good as the 680....the 480 is still less than the 560 Ti.

I say go with the 480 if you're looking into getting the most bang for your buck.

  • 06.19.2012 9:43 AM PDT

Get the 6950, the Sapphire one linked above comes with two free games, and you can always flash it to a 6970, giving you even more power. I've barely heard anything bad about them, and I'm actually waiting for mine to come in the mail.

NO....don't get the 6970. The benchmarks are hardly better than the 6950 and it's $140 more than the 6950.
