What do you guys think of these three parts? I want to game on them and I don't intend on overclocking the CPU. Will a stock fan work fine for the processor if I have a bunch of fans pre-installed in my case and good airflow?
Why that CPU?
It's an i5 and it's above 3.0GHz and I assume that's enough for games?
Yeah, but iirc, they performed worse than other i5s, and for a little bit more money, you could get a better CPU.
Oh, it did? I didn't think the model mattered when it came to processors, just the speed. Would a 3550 suffice?

So I saw this Motherboard on Newegg for a crazy deal and was wondering if it was any good. I was recommended thisone and was wondering how it compared. Any help would be much appreciated.
What processor are you planning to install?

If it's a LGA 2011 CPU, it'll only be compatible with a LGA 2011 socketed board, which the EVGA one is. The Gigabyte motherboard has a Z77 chipset which only supports LGA 1155 which is compatible with all Ivy Bridge CPUs.

Sure, if you wanted you could spend 10 more and get a 3570 (non k version) and get an extra GHz of speed, but its up to you.

I was recommended this ivy bridge processor. Speaking of which, do you think there are any other better and/or cheaper CPU's? I want to build my first PC with all these deals on Newegg but perhaps I was a tad ambitious because the price is piling up lol

If it can fit into your price range, it's a very good processor. Otherwise, go for a cheaper i5 or if you're really on a budget, an i3.

?! The 3570 is 4.1GHz?

  • 11.24.2012 5:11 PM PDT

So you definitely think its worth the money? And its not like another ___y bridge is gonna come out soon or? And that would mean the gigabyte motherboard is a necessity right?

No... Its 3.4GHz, with a boost up to 3.8GHz.

Get the Gigabyte motherboard, unless you want to wait about 5 months until Intel's new processor line which has a new chipset. Otherwise, Gigabyte and 3570k.

The 3350 is 3.1GHz. I may just go with a 3550. I'm not buying these parts, my parents said that if I want, I could ask for them for Christmas. So I guess their budget is under $400.

If their budget is 400, why not get the better processor? They'll be able to afford it.

Thank you Suicidal :)
Also, while I'm here what's the difference between a 32 and 64 bit version of W8? I want to put Windows 8 on my freshly built PC but I don't know which version to get.

And I want the OEM not an upgrade? And whats the difference between pro and not pro. Also Salty, what's the difference between i5 and i7? I'm surfing the newegg and linked to the CPU you reccomended me earlier was an i7 processor for not too much more...any pros to upgrading?

Thank you btw you're helping a noob with buyer's regret get his -blam!- together :)

64, but I'd recommend Windows 7 for gaming. It'll just be a better experience over 8. Trust me, I use 8 on my laptop. Get the Pro version. And you dont need an i7 unless you're doing tons of video or photo editing.

Yes, you want the OEM. Pro allows for XP compatability mode and use of more than 16GB of RAM (list of all differences here), so you only need Windows 7 Home Premium. The difference between the i5 and the i7 is that the i7 is hyperthreaded, meaning it has 8 virtual cores along with the regular 4 physical cores. The problem is barely any games take advantage of hyperthreading and probably wont in the future, so when it comes to gaming it offers no benefit over the i5. If you're doing video rendering and stuff like that it is useful. So no, since you're most likely just gaming you won't need to upgrade to an i7.

So I'm just gonna link my thus far components and would appreciate tweaks and critiques.

Case
Power Supply
Motherboard
CPU
SSD

I;m not sure on a GPU yet, and I'll just pick a random disk drive. Also, any recommendations for RAM? Or does that not really matter?

Thank you very much Salty. Also would you recommend W7 over W8 like Suicidal?

G.Skill or Corsair for RAM. And how much are you spending all together? What graphics card do you plan to get?

Windows 7

I was shooting for under a grand, and thus far the above components are like $774..,however my budget is loose with all the extra hours working around the holidays coming up. You recommended this gpu so I was gonna roll with that one. And any reason in particular on preferring Windows 7, just out of curiosity?

Ok, my parents said that if it's close to $400, then it's over budget. So $350 or less, how would you make this a decent but affordable last few parts? As in RAM CPU and Mobo? I won't be overclocking anything, by the way.

Apparently it offers better gaming performance, but it's not really noticeable unless the fps is right in front of your face. It's also more like the old OS's in comparison to 8, but if you use 8, you'll get used to it very quickly. 8 is also cheaper.

Gaming-wise, you won't get a performance increase. Otherwise, Windows 8 is overall faster than Windows 7.

You'll get a bunch of new features like the new Task Manager etc.

Other than that, I can't think of anything else that is different from Windows 7 other than a performance increase.

But differences are often negligible and I'm holding off upgrading.
Have you used windows 8? So far it is my favorite version of windows. Easily.
