tl;dr, the improvement from 1333 to 1600 is worth the price difference, but with anything higher than that, you're better off investing in lower CAS latency. In the end, if don't have a trained eye or are bad at comparing speeds, the numbers only make a difference in benches and you're better off putting that extra $10-$20 into your GPU.

MY USERNAME IS SO SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Everyone, found this thread a few days ago and I was really impressed. Would've saved me a lot of time when I was first deciding to go out and build a desktop. Anyway, this is the PC I will have fully made within a month. I should be getting my case, PSU, and my MOBO on thursday. Tell me what you think...I am open to some minor last minute changes.
Processor
Graphics Card(Discontinued on Newegg, it was lower $200-$230)
Motherboard
RAM
Hard Drive
Power Supply
Case
Disk Drive is just regular DVD read/write...I have windows 7 now, and I plan on using a T.V. or a old monitor till I get a new one.
Thanks in advance guys.

That's a good build.

I would suggest getting this PSU over that one and this graphics card instead.

Oops, corrected the PSU link.

You should have gotten a 7850 instead of the 560ti, and I'm not sure why you payed so much for your HDD. Is there anything special about it that I'm not seeing? And you should get the PSU recommended above me^

That's pretty good for your first try. If price isn't too big of a deal, you could always get the i5 3570k and not overclock it until you're comfortable. I would also get a Radeon 7850 instead of the 560 Ti. For the PSU, I usually only order Antec for budget, Corsair for mid-range, and SeaSonic for mid-to-high end. The one listed above would do fine. Finally, for the case, that one doesn't have very good cable management behind the motherboard. I would suggest the 400R

The CPU and mobo are fine, although the HDD confuses me. A 1TB Seagate Barracuda would be $50 on sale. A lot of the other stuff is personal preference, although this is what I would suggest based on my purchase history.

I hope you got that hard drive for cheaper or you already have one because that is very expensive for 7200 rpms and 500gbs. And I would say just save the five bucks and get 1600mhz ram but its not a big deal. over all nice build.

The graphics card was only $140 on black Friday.

I'm not sure which parts he has already ordered, if it was everything but the case, PSU, and mobo, or if those were the parts that he would order first.

  • 11.27.2012 6:12 PM PDT

Who the hell do you think I am?

To anyone considering parts for their future build, here's a little story that greatly stresses the importance of a quality power supply: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/11/26/exploding_computer_vs _reg_reader/

Just thought this was a good place to post it.

Same here. Sounds like something a prebuilt company would use in their computers.

They also make cases. I think they're not that common in the States.

The PSU has actually pretty good reviews.

But he still needs a monitor.

AY! I forgot to mention anything about that! No, what I was asking for would not (or was not meant to) include a monitor, OS, keyboards, mice, etc...Anything not explicitly related to the computer itself was not meant to be included. (As some of you said, too, if I don't have enough to get a decent monitor-which I should-but in the case I can't, I can definitely just use my TV.) The OS I would like to have would probably be Windows 7 Home Premium or (wishfully) Windows 7 Professional.
Also note: I am only beginning to scratch the surface of computer hardware, so critisizing me for not knowing something or being naive is actually encouraged by me. :O

The budget CAN shift, I just want to get an idea of what kind of setups I might be able to get myself into for what I want.

I agree, for this budget, it is a tight fit trying to make an acceptable desktop, but I appreciate all the support in this (possible) future endeavor.
Thanks again!

Yep. I think Antec did too, actually. But I can't remember.
