On the Left

Godshatter: I can go all the way with someone without being attracted to them.
CamCamm: How does that work?
Godshatter: I'm easily aroused by anything that moves. It's a curse.
Brain says 'No, that's ugly', body says 'ugly is fine with me'.

I want the link to the pic of the computer parts to performance chart thing.

Who needs this when The Flood has me.

:D

(I seriously do approve of this thread though.)

EDIT: If anybody needs a computer build for 'X' price range, please message me.

I've seen you post before, you overshoot power calculations a lot.

That was before I found the PSU calculator.

Now I know that a 700 watt PSU is too much/just enough.

Can you find things for AMD and ATI as well?

Sure. What "things" are you referring to? Benchmark tests, is x better than y given z parameters, etc etc.

Anything to add to the sections that seem to be weighted towards one side. We don't want people to just buy parts from one side.

Alrighty. After about a half hour of surfing, I found some hidden gems.

ATI comparison chart
Nvidia comparison chart
Logical Invrements PC Buying Guide - this should really be in the OP.
AMD GPU Guide

I'll update the OP, then, but I would rather you'd put it within the other chart you had of links, it puts everything in one place, since you've organized everything, you'll know where it belongs.

But if you don't want to, I'll just do it myself later, just saying it'll be easier on me if you do decide to add it to the list in the appropriate sections.

Out of interest, is there actually any need for the GTX 680 or 690 yet?

Please do not send me group invites.

Just out of interest: i'll gladly help anyone out who's building a computer. Check specs, make suggestions, etc. Feel free to hit me up, too.

For the 680: Eh...not really, but if you have the money, go for it.

For the 690: My reaction 1. My reaction 2. The 690 may be incredibly powerful, but the GPU costs $1,000. You can make a rig that can max out graphics for that amount of money.

1. You don't need Ultimate Win 7, Home Premium will do. There is no difference in terms of performance, but it'll really be useful if you're in some sort of business managerial position or you're setting up a PC running on a server network, which you're probably not. Whatever works for you.

2. You're getting 1 card, It'll probably be on less than half that power most of the time. 800 will be enough if you're looking to dual SLI with that card later on, which will probably last you quite a while. You can keep the 1050, I just don't know what you're going to be doing with all that power.

3. You don't need a SSD to be that big, only large enough for the OS for boot times, but I guess you can put a few games on there to boost load times.

4. You can get a cheaper motherboard with less PCI-E ports, there really is no difference in performance outside of over-clocking if you have the same chipset, and I doubt you'll need to run quad-SLI anytime soon, but it's your call.

I suppose it isn't a mistake but a rule of thumb would be to make sure you're grounded when handling parts.

1. I want to be able to use the "Vista Compatibility mode" only available in Pro, and Ultimate. I might go with Pro, it depends, I got time.

2. I will run Sli 570's possibly Tri eventually. Never bad to have breathing room right? Plus I might as well OC to prevent bottle necking with 2 or 3 570s.

3. Yeah I want the OS and games on it.

4. Future proofing. I want this build to be competitive for the next 5 years at least.

Thanks for the thoughts!

Can any of the more well-versed hardware guys give me some pointers on how to go about becoming well-versed in PC components/hardware myself? I'm really interested in computers, frequently game/use my own, and I know a small amount about them, but I don't have a very masterful understanding of software and hardware.

How long does it take for the new generation to drop in price? And is it worth waiting for the drop? How much will it drop?

 • 05.21.2012 5:05 PM PDT

I have built rigs before. But I've always used a guide with specifically recommended parts. I want to know what they mean, and how to pick out my own parts, instead of going with suggestions and reading reviews. All I really know about it RAM.

NOOB QUESTIONS AHEAD
What does gigahertz mean? What is a good amount of them.
How do I know what parts are good, what key specs should I look at for each part; mobo, pcu, etc?
Do I need a heatsink?
How do I know parts are compatible? (I just hope they are and have been lucky)
And where can I go to learn everything?

Thanks guys.

BTW here is a cool guide i1002.photobucket.com/albums/af150/The_FalconO6/CurrentL ogicalPCBuyingGuide/GuideSimple.png
