Okay, I can either buy a 6850, and wait a while, then buy another or I can buy another 5570 and crossfire them right now, before buying two 6850's down the line.

Which would be better, two 5570s or one 6850?
(Assuming I'm aiming for higher settings in gaming)

A single 6850 is almost as good as crossfire 5770's. I used Pasmark's GPU benchmarks list to figure this out. Search up the 5770, and then up the numbers (I just pay attention to the first number really), and then look up the 6850, and then compare your results.

I say buy a 6850 now, and then buy another down the line.

Thanks, I was wrong anyway, I'd be crossing two 5570s, so looks like I'm heading for the 6850.

He can use the Newegg power supply calculator to figure that one out. I don't think you need 700-800 watts though. I think that's a bit over-kill for a 6850.

Oh, you're doing multiple monitors? That should be good then. It will do just fine with the 670, I think.

If he's getting 2 cards, he's going to waste money buying 2 PSUs, and PSU's will only use as much power as the computer needs.

PSUs aren't the cheapest of components, and it would be wise to invest in a larger one than to invest in a weaker one while you're running a single card setup then going for two, but then realizing you either lack the power for it or is right at the edge of what the PSU can provide.

Doesn't matter. As long as the card as 1GB of VRAM or more, it'll be fine.

I've run my Nvidia 460m on another monitor (so my built in one plus the extra monitor). Now grant it...this isn't a perfect example, seeing that my card has 1.5GB of VRAM, but you only need 1GB of VRAM.

No, I mean AMD/ATI has Eyefinity, and he said multiple displays, not dual displays, any GPU can do that, but you need Eyefinity for more than 3 monitors.

Not that anyone's going to do that of course, since AMD's looking into putting more screens on their hardware, I'd say AMD has more knowledge in this field. Not 100% on that, but make of it what you will, I don't bother with multi-monitors anyway.

That is true....then....
AT THE GUY BUYING THE 6850, on the Newegg power supply calculator, right after you choose the 6850, directly to the right of the pull down bar, the number will be 1, set it to 2.

I didn't know that. So...is Evefinity something that you can download, or does it come on the AMD GPU?

You need special GPUs, upto 6 monitors I think with someting like, 6 Displayport outputs on the back of a single GPU.

Some of the higher end GeForce cards support 4 monitors. Like the GTX 670.

What do you recommend?

Price range? And is it going to be a pre-built or are you building it yourself?

I have unlimited money to spend, and I will be building myself.

I don't need the best, but I don't need the worse, just enough to run smoothly.

I threw this together quite quickly, and it's late, so there's some areas that could probably be improved on.

I didn't add in a monitor or anything like that, but I did add in the CPU cooler in case you ever plan on overclocking, which is why I gave you the 2600K and not 2600. I changed the graphics card from a 6950 to a 7970.

Here's my suggestion for that guy who wants something that can run everything smoothly

I didn't spend to long making this, so there's a chance of error, especially on the optical drive and hard drive, which were really meh. But what you'll find is:

Plenty of Vram for dual monitors and large resolution

SLI Ready

i5 2500k great bang for buck intel processor

It costs about 1.5k, but it should be able to run everything on max smoothly.

Also, water cooling is recommended for the GPUs

I didn't give him an Ivy Bridge, Ultimate, or 16GBs of RAM because those just seem really unnecessary. He probably won't use many of the Ultimate features, 16GBs of RAM is overkill for gaming, and I haven't heard much of a reason to get Ivy Bridge over Sandy.
