He said unlimited not budget build!

This is my build you can switch it up, but it's pretty good.

(Prices include shipping and discounts when available.)

And why do none of you guys use BBcode markup! It's sooo more easy!
I didn't give him an Ivy Bridge, Ultimate, or 16GBs of RAM because those just seem really unnecessary. He probably won't use many of the Ultimate features, 16GBs of RAM is overkill for gaming, and I haven't heard much of a reason to get Ivy Bridge over Sandy.

He said unlimited budget, so I posted my fairly expensive budget build.

How do I connect a 24-pin SATA older HDD to a 7-pin port on my motherboard?

24 pin SATA? I'm pretty sure SATA connections have only ever been 7 pin, except for the SATA power connectors, which are 24 pin.

Should be fine connecting it to your board with an ordinary SATA cable.

The HDD that I'm using.. It's a Seagate Barracuda 7200.7.

The cables provided with my motherboard.

Scratch what I had previously said, but I still have nowhere to connect this cord on my current mobo.

Your motherboard probably doesn't support that kind of interface connection (most modern motherboards probably don't as SATA is very good). You might be able to find a converter cable of sorts, but I would advise you to look up your HDD's interface type.

Another thing, my mobo/IO shield are being troublesome, should it be difficult for the two to match up?

How do you choose a case and a motherboard?
Like, what are things to look at?

Currently, cases seem purely aesthetic to me, lol. And motherboards...I have no idea what I'm looking at.

edit: I'm thinking of going to iBuyPower and building a rig, and then getting those parts via PC Parts Picker.

The motherboard's physical layout should not interfere with you connecting devices to it.

The motherboard depends on the CPU you plan to use (ie Intel's Ivy Bridge processors are generally LGA 1155), how much RAM you would want, if you want SLI/CrossFire, etc...

The case needs to support the motheboard's dimensions. The ATX factor is the most common standard. Check the motherboard's form factor and make sure the case fits that.

Wumpa, that's not a SATA drive, it's an IDE (PATA) drive. I don't know what board you have, but IDE ports aren't usually on high-end boards these days (or even newer standard ones).
If it does have one, you should be able to go to a computer shop and ask them for an IDE cable. =)

Here I am thinking the answer would be simple. :P

I'll just build it via iBuyPower and if I get no compatibility issues, I'll assume it's good.

It's simple. You just have to make sure each part says the same thing. ;P

Hmmm:

I'd personally spend about $30 more on the monitor for something like this.

The case seems a tad expensive, but otherwise you look to be good on the parts.

If you're using it for things like overclocking, then it's definitely good to have.

  • 07.02.2012 8:17 PM PDT

I got these cheeseburgers man....

But most people who plan on overclocking get a K processor, and he didn't, do I wasn't sure of he wanted to overclock or not.

My CPU power cord is too short.. Would anywhere locally have that or would I have to order online?

And also, I want to take my Toshiba mk3255gsx out of my current laptop, and put it into the new PC that I'm building. I can get it out of the lapotop and into the drive bay, but I have a question.

With a new mobo, would the OS transfer over smoothly along with the HDD? And what about things like software/movies/docs/etc.? I'm running Windows 64-bit (not sure if OEM)

The CPU doesn't have a power cord, but the battery does.

The CPU is a processor, not the whole thing.

CPU power cord? There's no real such thing as that, could you describe it, or take a pic?

Unless your case supports 2.5" drives, you'll need to buy a cradle for it to put in the 3.5" drive bay.

No, it probably wouldn't. You should be taking off software you need from the HDD, formatting it and loading a fresh copy of Windows onto it when you've hooked it up to the new machine.

Rig 1.

What do you guys think of this rig? Is everything compatible? Do I have everything I need to put it together? I heard you need some sort of gauze to glue the fan to the CPU or something along those lines.

Looks alright. Seeing as you chose the i5-2500 instead of the 2500k, I guess you won't need to worry about the CPU cooler. This means you can use the cooler that comes with the 2500, which has it's own thermal paste already on the bottom =)

What are the advantages of getting a 2500k over a standard 2500?

And thanks for being actively helpful man, sometimes this thread can be a ghost town.

the 2500k basically lets you overclock the living bejeebuz out of it, provided you have a good cooler (the CPU gets pretty hot if you overclock it enough). Plus it's only like, $10 more.

And no worries, it's my pleasure ^^

EDIT: Also, I can't really be bothered doing research now, but I don't know AMD cards too well, so not sure if that card is a good buy. I think it is from memory, but I'd need somebody else to back that up who knows AMD cards better.
