Alright, so I bumped it up to the 2500k because it was free; there honesty wasn't a price jump at all.

My question is, what does overclocking do; on anything? I hear people talking about OC(ing) their GPU's, does that just allow for your card to handle higher graphic settings?

So what would OC(ing) a CPU do?

the 2500k basically lets you overclock the living bejeebuz out of it, provided you have a good cooler (the CPU gets pretty hot if you overclock it enough). Plus it's only like, $10 more.

And no worries, it's my pleasure ^^

EDIT: Also, I can't really be bothered doing research now, but I don't know AMD cards too well, so not sure if that card is a good buy. I think it is from memory, but I'd need somebody else to back that up who knows AMD cards better.

I've seen people getting under temps of 60 even with 4.5 Ghz on stock cooling

Wow, that's amazing, got any links?

Didn't even know it was possible to accomplish that, but Intel chips do tend to run very cool with their own coolers, so I guess it could be.

EDIT: OCing makes your processor go faster (in layman's terms), doesn't really affect your graphics card to my knowledge.

Overlocking is whipping it to make it run faster. In simple terms, I don't know much about it, but I think some other people would.

Alright, so, I know (as you can probably tell) very little about computers. I want to get a "gaming rig" so to speak for my upcoming birthday (LMAOE18Y/O?!?!?). Well, I don't even know what my budget is yet for the rig, so it's difficult to speculate what parts I should be looking into.

With that said, could you guys build me one that's cheap yet packs one helluva punch in terms of graphics handling? Thanks a bunch, or, if you could just give me tips on how to keep the price low without ruining performance, that'd be cool too :)

And, thanks for the post. I really do appreciate all the help I can get!

Who the hell do you think I am?

I have a quick question. What exactly is the point of overclocking your CPU?

  • 07.03.2012 6:36 AM PDT

CPU power cord? There's no real such thing as that, could you describe it, or take a pic?

I meant the cord that comes from the power supply. It's an 8 pin plugin for the mobo.

Unless your case supports 2.5" drives, you'll need to buy a cradle for it to put in the 3.5" drive bay.

No, it probably wouldn't. You should be taking off software you need from the HDD, formatting it and loading a fresh copy of Windows onto it when you've hooked it up to the new machine.
Ok, my case does have two 2.5" bays so I should be fine there. As long as I have the product key I should be fine with Windows 7 right? Don't want to buy another disc..

Makes it much much faster without dishing out hundreds for a faster CPU.

The only downside I can think of is the fact that the overclocked CPU may require a larger fan and PSU, maybe a better motherboard if the one you have already is rubbish

But most people who plan on overclocking get a K processor, and he didn't, do I wasn't sure of he wanted to overclock or not.

Because I don't know. :)
I had no idea that the 'K' processor allows for over clock. Now I know! And thus don't need a cooler!

Runs faster, doy

(V)!_!(V) crab

Imagine overclocking kind of like a Bugatti veyron. The manufacturer limits to how fast the car will go for safty reasons. But for that one time you want to go fast you have to put in a speacial key to make it run at its full potential.

Chip manufacturers lock some chips so they dont overheat or make your system unstable; However taht doesnt mean you cant go in and unlock your chip to make it run to the max. Just like the car the more you do OC the shorter the life span of the chip will be because of the changing temps.

Doesn't cost much more, It's worth it, knowing you can do it and it has an extra feature that could mean a lot in later times could be useful.

So I am trying to use an older drive from a 7-8 year old computer as a secondary HDD to the one I plan to use as the :C, and it does not fit in any of the drive bays (it fits physically, but no screws match up with it). What would be the best way, if possible, to have it in my case?

I'm considering building a PC myself, as the pre-builts that meet my needs are far over $2000.
Here are the specs of what it would be, can the OP or staff give me an idea of how this would run?
Processor:
Intel i7 3960X ~4.0GHz

Graphics Card:
Nvidia GTX GeForce 560Ti

Motherboard:
Asus Rampage Extreme IV

Hard Drives:
256GB Samsung SSD
1TB Storage Drive

RAM:
32GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz

Cooling:
Intel Liquid Cooling

Case:
Corsair 800D

Who the hell do you think I am?

Yeah, anything past 16GB (of RAM) is basically a waste of money, so just get that.

8GB is all that you need. Any more than that is overkill....unless you're video editing.

It's always helpful when we know what you plan on doing with your rig, but I think you could bump up the graphics card a little if you have your money. If you don't, that's fine, it's a nice card. And unless you're doing some serious video editing, 32GBs is waaaaaaaaaaay too much RAM.

Get a lesser CPU and buff your GPU. That CPU makes the GPU look like a piece of -blam!-.
