It's normally not recommended to use the OS from another HDD on a new build because the OS was setup on different hardware..

So would it then be smarter to take off windows 7 on the HDD I'm going to use as the primary, and then install xp an upgrade to 7?

Sup' guys. I'd like if you guys gave me some advice on my current situation. Right now, I have no money. I'm selling my Xbox n' related things for around $450. So, let's say I get that cash. Now I have $450, and that's definitely not enough to build a good rig.

Thing is though, my 18th birthday suit extravaganza is coming up soon; and I don't know how much money I'll be getting from that. So, should I wait and see how much my total is (probably a little under a grand) or can I go out and use the $450 on peripherals?

I want to get a Black Widow keyboard from Razer, a Razer Deathadder, and a decent headset.

If you can do that then yes, a clean install would be best. I'm not sure how you came to get a Windows 7 upgrade, but it should work so long as it's not OEM (and you have a valid product key).

I'd personally wait to see what your funds will be in the end. No point in spending in a hurry.

GUYS GUYS GUYS!!! If I buy a computer with Intel HD graphics, can I add a video card later on?

You will have to upgrade the PSU and the GPU, and the motherboard will have to have an empty PCI-E slot

Why up grade the PSU? If you have enough power you should be fine.

  • 07.08.2012 3:41 PM PDT

I got these cheeseburgers man....

I know some pre-builts have very low PSU wattages, if that's the right term. Some have only like, 300 watts or so, not really enough for a GPU.

I'm building my own, with a HX1050 or AX1200. I think I will be fine no matter the GPU.

Tips?

I'm under budget right now, so I'm looking to see if this build seems fine.

Apparently I'll be supplied Windows free in the fall, so that's one saved expense.

I have to go in a second so I can't stay around to help you, but here are some things that should probably be clarified for other members of teh "group".

- Switch to an i5 for ten dollars more (intel i5 2500)
- You can get rid of the cpu cooler if you don't plan on OC(ing) your CPU
- Why only an SSD? Is that even possible? How do store things?

Gotta go, peace guise. Tell me if I need to drop the price on my sales!

I have a strong impression you still need to learn a thing or two about PC's.

You're only getting a 64GB drive for now? How long until you can add in a new one?

Otherwise, looks like a pretty nice budget build.

Well, it is a solid state.

I'm seriously thinking about saving for a gaming PC. However, I have a question.

Say I build a computer that can run BF3 on high, how long until I have to update all my computer components? Is changing my graphics card going to be a yearly thing?

I'm going to use the hardrive I'm currently packing as a secondary drive. My Operating system and important applications will be the only things on my SSD.

As for step-ups, any recommendations? I could go up to 750$. Don't want to spend that on SSD memory though, it's still very expensive.

He mentioned previously that he already has an HDD that he plans to use.

Each of the computers I've own have lasted around four years before they became "noticeably" dated. It really depends on what you expect to get out of your machine year after year. Take for instance the GTX 480. It's still a beast of a GPU even after two years. You won't be "top-of-the-line" in a year, but you'll still be up there. You only really need to change out other components as they break/no longer compatible. The CPU is under the same condition as your GPU.

Go for the Sapphire 6950, and if you're comfortable, flash the BIOS to a 6970.

Depends what kind of $$$ you are willing to shell out. For $2000 you could last 4 years easily, and not have to touch anything. For $1000 you could last a maybe 2 years. All depends on a lot of things.

This is my revised build.

If you were to upgrade in the future, how much of a performance boost would going for an i7 provide?

I'm looking for a build that will last a while and would be easy to upgrade in the future.

Or would adding another GTX670 provide more of a boost?

An i7 would not help at all.

Never go multi-GPU.

Your HDD is slow. Get something that's 7200 RPM.

On the PSU side, I'd recommend something modular.

Motherboard is mATX, not good. Get this instead. Cheaper, better, and comes with a free 16GB USB stick.

Here's my build that I finally made:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Core i3-2100 3.1GHz Dual-Core Processor ($112.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: Asus P8Z68-V LX ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($114.98 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($29.99 @ Newegg)
Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($64.99 @ NCIX US)
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 6850 1GB Video Card ($124.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Apevia X-Jupiter-Jr G-Type Black ATX Mid Tower Case ($49.98 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: Raidmax 700W ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($54.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Optical Drive: Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer ($16.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $569.90
(Prices include shipping and discounts when available.)

Rosewill Wireless-N PCI Adapter 300Mbps (Not included in the total above)

Pictures:
Front of the case (Sorry for the lighting, didn't think the little bit of light that's outside right now would do that much)
Side of case
Side of case, closer look (And the PSU's LED lights are on in this one)
Inside the case (I already know I need to do some cable management)
Back of the case showing the two aerials for the PCI adapter
All hooked up to my Vizio 32" screen

I actually built this computer about three weeks ago and only got to taking the pictures now, which their quality I apologize for; I had to use the camera on my phone until I get a SD card reader for my computer so I can use my actual camera. That's the only thing I miss about my other computer.

Pretty nice mate^^

You should learn how to cable manage. Your cables are an absolute mess :) You should have some room in you empty drive bays to hide unused/excess cable. It also helps with cleaning out dust and airflow.
