Who the hell do you think I am?

I'm about to order this for my brother

For the GPU I'm getting him a GTX560, but I'm not putting that in there for now. And I already have the keyboard, mouse, monitor, etc. covered.

What do you guys think?

Doesn't look too bad, Salty. I'm guessing you or your brother is going to overclock the CPU, since you have an aftermarket liquid cooler in there?

Finally got my build set up. I've got about fifty dollars left to play with just in case there's any needed changes. What do you guys think:

No, I don't believe he will be, but I threw it in there just in case.

Everything looks good, are you gonna overclock the GPU?

If I can figure it out than perhaps. Didn't original intend to. Why?

This is my revised build.

If you were to upgrade in the future, how much of a performance boost would going for an i7 provide?

I'm looking for a build that will last a while and would be easy to upgrade in the future.

Or would adding another GTX670 provide more of a boost?
An i7 would not help at all.

Never go multi-GPU.

Your HDD is slow. Get something that's 7200 RPM.

On the PSU side, I'd recommend something modular.

Motherboard is mATX, not good. Get this instead. Cheaper, better, and comes with a free 16GB USB stick.

Okay:

Firstly, why not double up on your GPU? Am I missing something? Surely that would be a relatively cheap and easy upgrade to do in say 5 years time rather than a whole new build?

Secondly, what is good about your motherboard (or what is bad about mine)? I'll be honest and admit that motherboards are the parts I have researched the least, so I went with a mid-tier one, and avoided going for the cheapest.

With multi-GPU, you get micro-stuttering, compatibility issues, bad airflow, higher temps, and a power hungry mofo. Too much goes wrong with SLI & Crossfire technologies, although it is slowly improving.

Regarding the mobo, you went with a Micro-ATX form factor. That's not necessarily bad, but in a gaming computer, you want to go with full ATX for the extra space, fan headers, I/O ports, etc.

The i7 does provide a very minimal boost, not worth the price.

Dual GPU can be very beneficial, more so than buying a brand new one, and trashing you old one. More that dual GPU provides lesser and lesser performance gain. 2 GTX670 can crush almost any game at highest settings.

Modular PSUs are more expensive, but worth it for some one with OCD.

As for the MOBO go with Z68 chipset, Z77 was designed for Ivy Bridge.

Is an anti-static wrist strap a must or is touching the metal on the case from time to time sufficient?

Why the Z77 MOBO chipset. As far as I know there is no advantage to using the Z77 with Sandy bridge. Use the Z68.

I'm reply #1111 lol

Who the hell do you think I am?

You definitely wont need a second 670 for now. Maybe in several years, but even now just the 560 can run any game at the highest settings. At least wait until the price drops substantially for a second one.

So what you're saying is that it's better to buy another one and suffer some obligatory compatibility issues along the way to squeeze out some extra performance, then eventually "trash two" instead of one?

I went GTX 570 SLI back in 2010. Never again.

Yes. If it was that bad no one would do it. Just because of your one bad experience does not mean that it is terrible. I'm sure it is much better with the kepler GPUs and new firmware, however I have no experience, yet.

  • 07.09.2012 2:10 PM PDT

After comparing prices, and attempting to get the most bang out of my buck, I've ended up with this.

I'm aiming for between 750-760$ CAD. Currently at 703$ CAD. What parts should I improve in order to increase overall performance? Preferably, the CPU, the GPU, or the RAM. I'm pretty set on the rest of the parts, unless there's a good reason to change them.

You can really increase it's performance, I read somewhwere that someone got your GPU up to the power of a 680 while overclocked.

I've seen the term 'Overclock' used multiple times in this thread, yet have no idea what it means.

Could someone fill me in?

Increasing the clock speed past the stock setting in order to get better performance out of it. E.g overclocking a 3.3Ghz CPU to 4.0 Ghz.

Ok, so I'm trying to pick out a new graphics card, and I just can't decide between 2. I'm going to either get the 6950 and flash the BIOS to a 6970, or a GTX 570. Which one would give me the best performance?

What's the difference between ATX Desktop, ATX Full, ATX Mid and ATX Mini? Will they all fit an ATX motherboard?

Mini won't fit ATX the others should. The difference is size.

Full being the biggest, and mid being the smallest? Or is desktop the smallest? (minus mini)

edit: A quick Google has suggested an ATX motherboard will fit in a mini ATX case. An ATX motherboard will not fit in a microATX case of any kind, on the other hand.

As for the length, width, depth. This is according to while you're facing the front panel of the PC, correct?

Is it a good idea to flash a 6950 to a 6970? Is the performance difference that great? Why do they even bother making a 6970 if you can do that with a 6950?

I guess so, but know little about AMD cards. Because your not supposed to hack the card lol.
