Yeah, just finished and it's not starting up..

swap the GNDs, or whichever is supposedly your power my computer wouldn't start up when I actually just mixed up the power button wiring.

Sorry, just woke up, very tired.

Nvm , I just read what you typed above, disregard what I just said, I don't think my power button said "GND"

There should be a red wire and a black/white one, I think it was the black/white that goes in the "-" and the red goes to "+"

The wires are an off white or black. (They're from the case, not the power supply.)

I'm just trying the ones for the power button now since I'm just trying to at least make sure it works. The cable or that is a set of two pins that are in the same plastic frame together so I have to plug both of them in or none o them. I'm thinking I'm supposed to align them vertically with the slot for the power button and GND, but I don't know which of two to put on the top/bottom. Let me go and try both.

Tried both, still not working.

  • 07.11.2012 1:08 AM PDT

Can I try to turn it on without using the case's power button by using the direct power button on the mobo itself?

  • 07.11.2012 1:12 AM PDT

YES YES YES YES its -blam!- working and I have no idea how I fixed it but its -blam!- working YEAAAAHh

Sorry, lol. My case looks awesome. I was just about to give up in disappointment too.

Is 16GB of RAM enough? I'm building my parents a computer. They'll be using it for Facebook games and email and stuff.

What GPU should I get?

That's overkill, especially if they're just basic users. And it depends on what types of games they play and at what settings/fps they want to play them at.

They play Farmville and Bubble Town. Stuff like that. Sometimes they'll play checkers and solitaire too.

A dedicated graphics card is pointless for that, integrated graphics that come on processors should be fine.

He might as well get a low end laptop.

Basically.

What about CPU? I heard i7s are perfect for games like checkers where the computer has to "think" about the moves it's going to make.

Nah, just go for something with an i3. It'll do all the basic things they'll need just fine.

I know they're for the front panel

Can you take a picture?

Does as much "thinking" as an IBM power processor form the 90s. They're all algorithms and calculations, just processing patterns, no actual independent strategy is involved.

All that factors form a better processor is how fast this data can be processed

Herp.

Seriously though, I'm thinking about building a PC for myself. I have a budget of $2000 that I've saved up for it.

Anyone want to recommend anything?

4GB is enough for any and every game out there right now. Buy 8 to future proof your PC.

Any more is actually counter-productive, as the PC will still read the extra RAM as dead space.

...I hope you are joking...

If you are, then kudos.

You wont need that much right now. If you want to get it, that's fine, but it will be less expensive in the future and you can always add more then, so for now I recommend getting 8.

Buying vista would save me a bunch of money though..

Vista is garbage, I would skip it altogether. Either get 7, or live with XP for a while. I'm assuming you want Windows but Linux is always a great option, and it's free. (I would recommend Ubuntu)

You miss my point. I have an upgrade disk for windows 7, but not an OS to upgrade, if you will. So I would only be using vista as a base to upgrade upon.

Gaming, mostly. Of course it'll be used for uni assignments and whatnot, but that's not a big deal. $2000 is my upper most limit. I'd prefer it to be less however as I still need to buy my motorcycle, but it's what I have aside.
