I could use this thread this summer.

I don't know what successful builders really is, but I guess you could count me as one. Built my machine entirely by myself and I learned a lot while doing so.

You can put my name down in the stuff or whatever. I think I could help a bit.

Prebuilts are better.

But cost more.

Not that much more.

Yeah they do.

You don't get nearly as much bang for your buck with prebuilts.

But Still.
I rather pay 1200$ with the parts I need inside which are suited to my needs instead of relaying of Prebuilts.

You're over exaggerating. It's making you look pathetic.

It's true.

Decided I'd go easy on the graphics cards for now and then crossfire another one later on.

64-bit windows is a MUST if your going to be using more than 4Gb or RAM. i would also recommend going for DDR3-1600 instead of 1333. it can be found on Newegg for an extra 3 bucks.

^ What he said, 32-bit can't use more than 3GB of Ram.

Hey, can someone throw together a quick mid-range build for me?
I want to be able to run most somewhat-old games, possibly leading up to Skyrim. I have a few XP installs, but I might be able to get 7, so I'm not sure on that. And the cheaper the better.

So,
around 3 GHZ dual core or any quad core
4GB RAM
Mid-high range GPU (This is the part where I'm clueless-help)
Obviously, it needs a wireless adapter, ethernet, VGA etc. etc.

Of course, the catch is that I'd like to use a laptop case. Not too concerned about battery life (that'll always be -blam!- - a few minutes where it can boot while I plug it in will do), I just want it to be somewhat portable.

I have an old Inspiron 9300, on which I love the bigscreen, but the thing is a giant brick and really old, so I'm not sure on air circulation and if newer parts will fit.

Well, in that case, you probably won't be building it. You'll just have to look around for some decent (pre-built) gaming laptops.

Budget is the key factor here.

A decent laptop that can run most games well will run you about $600-700 but you can't custom pick parts. Obviously building a computer will allow you to pick the parts individually and provide you with more performance but you lose that when you go portable.

You can't extrapolate a budget from the preferred specs?
Cheaper the better, say, under $600-$700 (not including OS)

If a gaming laptop is what you're after, going by what you listed, it'll probably be around $1000, more or less (the OS is always included).

And building my own laptop as opposed to a tower would bring the price up above the pre-built mark?

Laptops all come with windows 7 home basic 64 bit at the bare minimum. I took a quick look around newegg but a lot of their better laptops are out of stock. Only one I could find for now is this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168342463 27

This lenovo will have no trouble with Skyrim.

You can't build a laptop, they only come pre-built. You could build a tower for around the same price that would blow this laptop out of the water performance wise though if you wanted. For example:

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/8TIu

Price, performance, portability. Pick two man.

You don't really just go and build a laptop. There are some people out there that do, but it's usually a large, expensive project that takes forever, as they have to make many things themselves (such as the case).
If you want a custom-built one, one of the main companies that do those are Dell. Basically pick the parts you want put in it, and they ship it to you. Problem with that is, it's usually quite pricey.

If you want to build a PC, it'll have to be desktop.
It won't be portable (at least, easily portable), but it will be much cheaper, more powerful, and run far cooler than an equivalent laptop.

And upgrading the old Inspiron is gonna cost more than it's worth, and then crap out on me when I go to use it right? (of course it does that anyways)

You don't upgrade laptops, either. That's the problem with them. Something breaks, you generally have to buy a whole new one.

Hmm...Alright. I think I'll wait on this one. I'll just stick with what I have, and maybe get a pre-built sometime.
