Do I need an antistatic wrist strap? Or simply touch a metal object or a grounded appliance? Can I just simply touch my aluminium MacBook to discharge static electricity? It's connected to the socket with a grounded plug.

Just make sure you have no carpet or anything like that. You can also just keep touching you computer case that should make you static free.

My room has a wooden floor. So am I all set or I need to get the wrist strap?

You'll be fine. Just touch your metalcase before every part you install and afterwards too. That's what I'm doing at the minute.

Brand is really irrelevant. All depends on the individual board, not a brand. That's how I see it.
Of course the materials put into a board would differ a bit from model to model, but I'd say a lot more from brand to brand. I don't think that's irrelevant at all.

I'm just going by personal experience. I like Asus, but they do seem a bit more prone to issues than Gigabyte. I've also heard quite a few DOA cases with ASUS, but no Gigabyte ones.

After dealing with hardware so much, you get a feel for it. By now I've built around more than 10 PCs, and serviced around over 30 PCs with hardware issues. Through that experience, plus what I've heard, I've found Gigabyte to be one of the best brands in terms of durability.

You should be ok if you touch your case regularly while you work. I'd highly recommend it though, you can buy them for a couple of bucks, and it's practically guaranteed protection against static.

That feel when the external build worked fine...

...but the internal build just stares at you when you turn it on.

Urgh. Back I go.

Hi guys.

Just reposting this again as I rewired the whole rig last night and still got no power.

Are there any common issues that may be the problem? Like I said the external build worked fine but when I press the power button nothing happens now.

I'm really lost for what to do. I was thinking about gutting the build and redoing the external build again as I knew it worked and if it doesn't work this time around I'll know something has broken along the way...

Any advice would be appreciated.

If the fans don't spin, it could just be the front panel's power button wiring.

Try switching the negative and positive around

Urgh.

It's the bloody power button wiring itself. It's defective.

After gutting my build and jump starting it again, it worked. So I built it again and it didn't start with the power button. However, jump-starting it with a screwdriver now powers everything, all fans, graphics card, CPU fan, etc.

God dammit. I have emailed Amazon for a replacement case. So close.

On the plus side - I know what I did was right and I wasn't the problem. I can build a PC!

Yeah.

Though I've just rewired the reset switch to the power switch prongs, so now I can power on my build with the rest switch hehe.

Thanks for help guys.

The hardest part is trying to convince my parents to let me get parts instead of a laptop... But I can assure them I do know how to screw things down and PC building is essentially that other than hooking up cables. :/

Hardest part is mounting the processor
its a bit scary
What? On ASUS boards, you only lift the tab thing, gingerly place the processor on the pins and gently push the cover down.

Not just Asus boards. Pretty much all recent boards have that. Of course, it varies a bit from socket to socket. For example, most sockets have 1 lever to secure the processor in place, and holes to clip the heatsink into. Some are different, though, like Intel's socket 2011, which has 2 levers, and the heatsink has to be screwed in, rather than clipped in.

One more question, after I hooked everything up correctly, do I leave the side panel to open to check if all the fans are spinning during power on or just close it up?

In newegg videos it says to leave your left panel off the first time you boot it up in the case (supposedly it won't boot if you put the panel on, because of computer superstition.

BTW watch newegg the vids if you haven't.

I think I'll swap in the PSU for a modular one. Less cumbersome. :D

Another question about antistatic wrist bands, if I get one. I should clip it on one of the case screws right? Or do I need to get the PSU in, plug-in into a socket (my country uses UK sockets that have an on/off switch) that's switched off and that'll guarantee a perfect ground?

You want to clip it to a large metal object which will generally be your computer case. If you are in the need of fully grounding yourself with a wall outlet then I'd suggest moving. ;)

Lol nope, not on the P8z77 I had to put some serious pressure to get the tab back into locked position, and yes it was installed correctly.

Yeah, I was worried about it but it is supposed to have lots of pressure put on it.

Sorry for the incessant questions. I'm a complete newb when it comes to PC building.

Anyway, some amendments to the build:

GTX 670 goes out, in favour of Radeon HD 7950 as it's a bit cheaper
ASUS mobo over Biostar

I'd rather get a 670 but it's really just a matter of preference when it comes to AMD vs NVIDIA GPUs.

Hey guys,

I just want to say a big thank you for everyone who has helped me decide which parts to buy, and with other tidbits of advice over the last few months.

All your help now means I'm sat playing Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2 on my brand-new pc.

Kudos to all of you. Learnt a lot. Really not as daunting as I once believed.

(if anyone fancies hooking up for game sessions let me know - i have quite a few Xbox friends...but none on PC)
