Microcenter has some amazing deals on it, they usually have prices that beat Newegg
Posted by: Selecao
I'm sort of experienced in building computers, and I've done research on the parts I'm getting. I'm just wondering if there's a better value on something I'm not aware of.

PCPartPicker
Newegg

They both lead to the same build, but Newegg has pictures for the parts.

Edit: I can give you my reasoning for those parts if you so wish.

Does one need to go online and order parts and/or is there a actual store you can go to to buy the parts?

Yeah, that's why I went to PCPartPicker, but they don't display images of your components, so I remade the build in Newegg.

There are brick and mortar stores that sell PC components, but they're generally few and far between. They also don't have as broad of a selection as online retailers such as Newegg and Amazon.

Just want to point out something real quick....that power supply is not by a well known company....and is not at least 80 plus certified...DO NOT BUY THAT POWER SUPPLY.

On another note....Go with this build instead.

Dont skimp out on the case unless you really wanna stay within a tight budget.
You probably should've done an i3 based build or an APU based build for that, either of those and you would've been able to get a much better case and PSU.

The 480 isn't exactly a great card. It's too hot and draws too much power.

It's similar in most areas, but the heat and power consumption aren't worth it.

Remember to be realistic with budgets, the minimum I recommend for a custom build is 800 Dollars

Anything under that and I personally think your wasting money.

You can make perfectly acceptable computers for under 800. They won't have the best parts, but they'll work.

Just as a little tip, next time you make a build, I'd recommend using PCPartpicker, because of how much easier it is to view, instead of having to click each link for each part. but other wise, nice build.

See thats just it. It will "work"
If your taking the time to build a custom Rig I think your normally after more than "work"

I mean my rig came in aroun 2,200 With all the warranties. But The way its built and the parts I used it will run things 6 to 7 years from now.

I'm saying if your taking all that time and effort save up atleast 800 for parts and another 100 for warranties on the mobo and cpu

But the joy of making your own build, is that you can start out with a small budget and just upgrade certain parts later. You could start out with a overall better build at first, but some people just don't have that much money to spend at one time.

Well if you want to start on an upgrade arch, You need to by a great mobo and Great processor off the bat.
I understand where people are coming from with low budget builds but the whole reason i went custom is because i was aiming for top of the line

If you have a budget, then you're probably not looking for the best parts money can buy, you're looking for the best value for your money.

The purpose counts too. Maybe someone wants to make a cheap and portable LAN box, or an HTPC. Those kinds of builds don't generally breach the $600 mark.

Less knowledgable users may also not appreciate a more expensive build, and may opt for cheaper parts. At least that will get them started in PC building scene. If they're truly interested, they can expand their own knowledge and see the value in more costly parts.

  • 07.30.2012 10:49 PM PDT

Well, from what I've tended to notice, the CPU and MOBO can tend to be very good yet still decently priced. GPUs tend to be the most expensive. And most budget builds I've seen have had pretty good CPUs and MOBOs.

Obviously, do you know the wattage of your PC's power supply and motherboard make?

Preferably something over 60GB. OS footprints get larger and larger over time, and you'll likely have most of your programs installed to it by default.
Whichever programs you want to load faster. Obviously.
