You don't upgrade laptops, either. That's the problem with them. Something breaks, you generally have to buy a whole new one.

There generally ain't supposed to be any room for upgrades, a laptop's form factor is so compact, you can only replace the RAM and the HDD.

Close, but the plague killed those infected with it, and the ignorant are still alive.

You can get a pretty big boost in performance by replacing the HDD with a SSD (or even a never HDD, although the benefit/cost ratio has gone down quite a bit recently). This will not give you any better gaming performance, but it will help quite a bit with load times and the general "sluggish" feeling that comes with older laptops. However, a decently large SSD is very expensive; but if you can live with less storage space, you can now get 240GB for just of $200.

If you do have space for two 2.5" HDDs in your laptop, you can keep a 500GB HDD for media storage and a smaller (maybe ~150GB SSD for your OS and programs)

Edit: I hadn't realized how much the cost of SSDs has gone down.

Tin shacks and catfish bones.

Are there certain specs/identifiers for someone to know if a motherboard will fit their case?

  • 05.30.2012 9:46 AM PDT

My Anime List | Steam.

Intel C2D E8400 3.8GHz | Asus P5Q Deluxe | Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 2GB Vapor-X | G.Skill 4GB DDR2 1066MHz | Windows 7 Professional x64 | Sennheiser HD555 | Leopold Otaku with Cherry MX Blues | Cyborg R.A.T. 7

Try to match the form factor listed on the case. Micro ATX mobo fits in a micro ATX case, standard ATX can fit in mid and full size ATX cases.

It happens to us all.

I've got a tip:

When you're securing the processor into the motherboard, the lock will take quite a bit of pressure. No, you're not going to break it.

Just get a full ATX, do NOT get a micro one or you will regret it. And the case will indicate before you buy it.

Awesome, finally up in top forum topics. Hopefully this will stop the constant flow of PC hardware-related threads.
Congrats, Chainsaw =)

Probably will much more thanks to this thread, though.

Okay, I'm going to scour through the thread to look for the things people have recommended to put in the OP, shouldn't take long anyway.

Hold it right there.

Hello. Name's Brian. Look, if you're looking for a flame war with me, just open up the Flood and write up some not-nice things about religion and I'll bring my nukes to the party.

If you want some other way to contact me, you can forget it.

If you're interested in some of my work, you can check my homepage out.

Yo, my cooling fan is growling at me.

I dusted it off and it stopped.

In about two days it started growling at me again.

What do, Cystic? I can't be expected to dismantle and dust my computer every two days.

OT: There's a question for you Cystic.
You could also try giving a nod out to computer maintenance.

Growling? Sounds like it's going off it's bearing. Can't do much about that usually, except replace the fan.

Uhh not to sure about that one, to me it just sounds like it's dying but I could be very wrong, I'm not used to seeing this kind of problem because I don't think it has ever happened to me before. I could research it, but you could do the same anyway, I would see if anyone else in the thread knows what to do with it as long as they're competent with this problem.

I'll see what I can do about maintenance

Are you sure it's your fan? I had a similar problem, but it was my DVD/CD drive, and at the time i didn't know how to fix it. Got it replaced, it stopped "growling."

Pinpoint where the sound is coming from, we can help you from there.

Also, PM me what you find, just in case I don't see the thread when you post.
