Hey guys, just gonna drop some knowledge about GPU's and why they have those big numbers (Source is wikipedia)

Radeon
Currently, ATI names each card by generation, series, and by performance. The first number is the generation number (IE 5000) and is related to the chipset used by the video card.

The second number indicates the series quality in the generation, starting from:
-0400 to 0600 at entry level, for media and home theatre
-0700 for low intensity video games (typically using older graphics engines) or high-intensity games with lowered settings.
-0800 for high-intensity games.
-0900 relate to the generations most powerful single chip offerings, if the third digit is a 9 (xx9x), then the card is a dual chip card.

The third digit is the relative quality, within a series (IE a 5850 is less powerful than a 5870).

Typically, a card of a higher series will always have more processing power than a card in a lower series, even if the relative quality is better (a 5770 will be outperformed by a 5850).

Nvidia
I'll keep this one short, since it is similar to Radeon.

Nvidia's popular cards follow a similar naming system.

The first digit represents the generation of the card (later generations are more efficient/powerful). So a GTX 480 would be the 4th generation equivalent to the 5th generation GTX 580.

The second digit represents the chipset/quality of the card. So a 550 is outperformed by a 570.

Actually it's surprising how many people don't know that (Having built my own rig 8 months ago, I did not know how to tell the difference between the Radeon card up until recently). Plus I think it would be helpful to have that info here for the people who are just starting to get into computers.

I'm considering in cheapening out the CPU by opting for AMD. I can save roughly $200 with an AMD CPU + Mobo.

CPU - AMD FX-8120 3.1GHz 8-Core Processor - $150
Motherboard: Asus M5A99X EVO ATX AM3+ Motherboard - $115

Should I stick to Intel or AMD?

Intel is better, but if you go with AMD, buy the 8150.

The woodpecker sighs,
"The bark on the trees was as soft as the skies."
While the wolf waits below, hungry and lonely;
Crying to the moon,
"If only, if only."

I'm fairly certain that an i3 processor beats one of the best processors from AMDs last generation
linky
Also, with the i3, you can upgrade to a more powerful CPU later.

My other config has an Intel Core i5 3570K and the FX-8120 is somewhat comparable.

Hi all!
So, i got all the parts and assembled them, installed windows and all the updates etc.
But, when i start the computer, first the asus screen comes up, and says "no device found"(along with an error beep!). Then It goes black. Then the asus screen comes back, saying nothing, and then windows starts normally. I plugged my SSD into he SATA6GB_1, and my dvd-reader into the SATA3GB_1. I also have an HDD that I have yet to plug in, but its also SATA6GB.
Did it plug something wrong? If it wasnt clear, its an Asus motherboard.

Ok first of what asus board
second does the board have on board error reporting.
third, if so during the beep which error number is reported.

Asus P8H67-M PRO
No error message. First it says; "scan device."
Then, after a short time, "No device found!".
I plugged in my HDD, no change.

Sounds like you might have a boot device setup error,
Enter your boards bios settings and cheack to make sure it isn't looking for your main hard drive in the wrong place first. See if the board is looking for sata6_2 or even in a sata 3_* location then make sure its not cheacking for a raid setup. Some boards do this by default.

Try swapping the boot device over to the HDD and then back to the ssd in the same bios sesion... aka just cycle the boot device options and save.
I updated the bios, no change. I tried swapping the dvd with the SSD, no change. I didnt find whether it looked at sata6_2 or sata 3_*, I just saw the SSD & dvd at the bottom, in a "choose what to read first" row. I think.
EDIT: I dont know if it's important, but I cant enter the bios settings the first time the Asus screen pops up. Only after it says "No device found!", and the second time the Asus screen pops up can I actually go to bios-settings.

I built my first rig a couple weeks back. Considered mid-high tier. Loving it. I need to upload pics but the specs are:

Sharktoon t28 case
1 TB Corsair Black HDD
MSI 560 ti GPU
i5 1500K(Seriously one of the best damn processors made.)
On a ASRock z77 motherboard with a 700 watt PSU.

Runs everything flawless. Considering upgrading to a 690 GPU after I get a SSD for my OS. Or just getting another 560 ti for SLI.

The person meant 2500k.
He has a 650 Ti as his GPU.
He's going to upgrade to to a 690. DON'T upgrade to the 690 though, upgrade to the 670.

Just get a 670. Don't get the 690, it's completely overkill and not worth over $1000. With the $600 you save buying a 670 instead, you could get a great SSD along with other nice peripherals.

If that guy was serious about buying a 690 ($1,000), and then with the money he saves by going with the 670, he can do dual 670's in SLI mode, and still have some money saved,

I can answer almost any question here.
Plus this is actually the most helpful forum without being belittling to the people asking. Alot of hardware websites can be like
"WOW you REALLY don't know.."

From reading your posts, it doesn't seem that the error is relating to your SSD in any way. If it was, the error would be more specific to "No boot device detected." My assumption is that your computer is expecting a device that it was told it was getting, but isn't actually getting said device. Check your BIOS for any settings on devices that might be attached to the motherboard. Also, what exactly are you plugging into your computer (beyond the CD drive and SSD)?

"No device detected" is a very generic error, and could mean anything from fans to some third-party hardware. It however should not mean anything related to boot devices, CPUs, GPUs, or RAM. Those all should have specific errors to themselves. Again though, they should doesn't necessarily mean they do.

Also, it does not matter what SATA port you plug your devices in. If they are showing up in your BIOS, they have been detected. The only difference is the speed at which some ports run.

Your question on being unable to enter the BIOS on the first flash screen is normal. The computer most likely hasn't finished checking everything yet, and when the second screen pops up it is ready for input.
