I'm going to embark on a pet project.

Build a good gaming PC for £500 or less.

Case
CPU
Motherboard
RAM
GPU
Power supply
Hard drive
Optical drive
OS

Price (WITHOUT shipping charges): $491.07

***NOTE***: All of these prices were added together from the Amazon listing. If you buy the product through a seller, it will be less.

Hate to break it to ya, but AMD arent that great with CPUs.
A lo of them have quite a bit of trouble with running certain games, and some cant run them all together even if they're powerful enough.
hell my friend cant play SR3 because he has an AMD CPU.

All depends on the CPU. Just like there are old/bad AMD CPUs, there old/bad Intel CPUs.

The CPU I chose in that build is a really good CPU. Not the best, but very good. It's capable of running any game to date.

Oh, and I just realized I could save another $90 or so by getting the OS through... other means. *mischievous face*

Maybe that can go toward a sound card. Eh, I've got time to think about it. I won't have the money for a few weeks, at the least.

A sound card is NOT necessary AT ALL. The motherboard has audio built in.

Also, which the $90 that you save...if you do...that (i'd recommend that you don't), put that money towards a better graphics card.

Well I dun goofed it looks like. Thanks for saving me a lot of potential misery lol. And I don't really want to have to do that, but if I get too impatient while I'm saving up, there might be a shift in my moral compass. It just seems like the money would be wasted while I know I could put it to better use.

You can find those same exact parts for cheaper.
A sound card and interface card are NOT necessary.

An internal hard disk would be preferable...unless you'll be playing your games on another gaming computer. So I recommend to swap out the external hard disk for an internal hard disk.

Swap out the 2500K with the 3570K. It's only a few dollars difference, and the 3570K is a ton better than the 2500K.

However most AMD products (even GPUs) arent the most reliable.
IMO its always best to go with Nvidia/Intel, just because its more reliable, and a LOT less prone to overheating

You can't judge a whole company's product bad off of a few bad CPUs. Plus, they probably aren't bad, they're probably just out dated.

Also, doesn't matter what brand of video card you get. Both AMD and Nvidia cards have their fair share of over heating.

The over heating is from a lack cooling in the case, not the card itself.

No problem, and yes, all of your parts are compatible.

EDIT: For upgrading the CPU, I meant 3570K, not 3670K.

It's ok...if you don't know something, just ask it.

Also, the case has a couple fans built in, the CPU comes with a stock fan, and the video card has a built in fan. The cooling should be good enough...but if you'll be overclocking...you need more cooling.

I see, ok. I'm using my phone's browser, so it's a little difficult to look up these parts. Thank you again, you've been a great help! Hopefully I can start buying parts for this bad boy in a few weeks :D

Before I shop for parts this Saturday (serious now), which build should I go for and should I cheapen out on certain components?

[Edited on 08.06.2012 11:37 PM PDT]

  • 08.06.2012 11:36 PM PDT

I'd pick the Intel over the AMD.

I did a lot of search work for reviews for both, and reviews for Intel seem to be better all round.

It really is a case of "getting what you pay for" when it comes to PC's (excluding OP Alienware stuff).

Intel are more expensive, but worth it in my opinion.

P.S: This is my build. I initially went for something similiar to your AMD build but a Hex Core, then swapped out for what I have here.

It maxes out everything I have played so far, Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, Left 4 Dead, Crysis.

Hey guys, I'm trying to get a build going for $800ish, and I can't seem to get it in that price range. Could one of you make me a build using an Intel and Nvidia, the rest doesn't really matter. I'd do it myself, but my laptop broke down and navigating on m tablet is terrible.

This one

You may be able to get a cheaper one, but this is an awesome monitor.

For a keyboard, pick out the Logitech G110 (again, you can always pick out a cheaper keyboard), and for a mouse, I personally really like the Razer Deathadder (again, you can find a cheaper one).

Yeah, I've heard a lot of good things about that monitor. I wouldn't spend so much on a keyboard though, and I'll probably just use the wireless mouse I bought a few months ago for my laptop, its good enough.
