I got these cheeseburgers man....

Actually, I've seen some pretty heavy upgrades on a few laptops, mainly Thinkpads. But actually, you could upgrade my laptops processor from a 1.6GHz single core to a 2.2ish dual core. Of course, it'd be really hard, but still double.

It's a shame most laptops aren't upgradeable, I would have modded my craptop by now. :/

Some laptops have the GPU located on a separate PCB and they are somewhat upgradable.

One example. They upgraded the GPU of this Alienware M17x from a GTX 280M to a Radeon HD 5870M.

In fact they've made upgrades to otherwise non-upgradable laptops, check out their channel.

It's still not worth the trouble and since desktop components will always have more power than laptop components you're really best off just getting a desktop.

I agree, getting a Desktop for the price of an Alienware(assuming you built it) will get you way better components.

True. I was initially going for a HP laptop but my configs are a couple of thousand cheaper, with a monitor too!

Is there a way I can get Windows 7 at a cheaper price than $90? I've heard about students getting discounts from microsoft and I'm a full time student at a community college and other people finding holes in the system and getting the OS for free.
Microsoft does not let any store sell their OS for any more or less than they set it at.

I've heard of students at colleges being able to get it, but I don't know.

My Anime List | Steam.

Intel C2D E8400 3.8GHz | Asus P5Q Deluxe | Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 2GB Vapor-X | G.Skill 4GB DDR2 1066MHz | Windows 7 Professional x64 | Sennheiser HD555 | Leopold Otaku with Cherry MX Blues | Cyborg R.A.T. 7

My college offers Windows 7 as a free download from their software site. If your school has one, you might want to check it out.

Yarr harr fiddle Dee Dee..... But I'd really recommend not to, because A. Its illegal B. If you're ever stupid enough to download a patch for a cracked version of Windows, you'd be screwed. And lastly, a chance of downloading a windows loaded with viruses. So, don't be cheap, and just buy it legally.

I am on a budget and desperately need a new PC like, yesterday.

My budget is about 400, which at max can go to 500 (Without OS, Disc Drive, Monitor, K&M).

I tried to make one but considering I couldn't add a CPU, I failed. I am really fixated on that Motherboard and while I wanted that 550ti, it will have to wait.

While I certainly don't recommend the second option (finding holes in the system), colleges generally have some sort of deal with Microsoft to provide the OS at a highly discounted price. As Fogun suggested, check around your college to see if they provide discounted software. Not all colleges do, and they don't all provide the software the same way.

While it's most likely to get your budget to work going with Intel, I think you'll find AMD's prices more reasonable for your budget (which would mean you'd need another motherboard).

There is a legal way to get it for only $8.

Looks enticing. I wonder if they'll have it at the shop by the time I get parts from them.

I don't think the 660 Ti is going to be released for another few months.

nvm just officially announced it...

Looked at motherboards.org bench marks for the ASUS 660Ti DCUII

BF3 1920*1080 Ultra avg FPS: 69

O.O Mighty tempting.... at ~$330

The only real difference between the 660ti and the 670 is that it has a smaller bit size. Otherwise the voltages are just a little different.

The performance is a bit different too. They would be stupid to make a card that outperforms the 670 for a lower price.

Nope

Here's what you do:

1) Download the Windows 7 PROFESSIONSAL (must be professional) 64 bit (x64) ISO file from this website. I've used it before, and it's 100% safe.

2) Next, download the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool. You will use this to put your Windows 7 ISO onto a thumb drive or DVD. EITHER MUST HAVE AT LEAST 4 GB OF STORAGE ON IT.

3) In your BIOS, tell it to boot from the thumb drive (or DVD if that's what you're using).

4) Run through the Windows 7 installation process.

5) Now you need a product key. You can buy one from this guy. He has over 1,100 ratings, and his feedback is at 99.2% and he has a 5/5 stars rating. So it's safe to buy form him, and you will get your product key.

6) Enter in your product key once the installation is over.

7) Enjoy!

Yes, that's what I just said.

Smaller bit size = lower performance. Not that it's bad, just not as good as the 670.

Thinking about getting the 670 over the 560 ti. I feel like the 670 is more future proof. Thoughts?

It is, but it's twice the cost. If that's too much, the new 660 ti is in between at $300.

The low memory bandwidth scares me on the 660 ti. :|

64bit=\=x86 But other than that, I'll probably buy Windows from him then. How can he sell it so cheap?

Expect only reference cards for this time being. But I'll get it for the price/performance ratio. I've heard that it smacked the 7870 in terms of benchmarks.

Aww, too bad the guy only ships to the US. I could've gotten a code from him. That's legal by the way, some university was selling legal CD keys instead of full copies of Windows 7 here.
