What are your thoughts on the 660 ti and the low bandwidth memory? Is that a deal breaker?

Would you recommend another card at that price range?

I think it's actually really smart for Nvidia to fill that $300-$400 gap that AMD is in. I actually just ordered an EVGA GTX 660ti today since my 560ti crapped out (-blam- you MSI). The low bandwith memory imo isn't a deal breaker. It's still a powerful card from the multiple tests I've observed. A word of caution though, it -is- overpriced. If you can afford it, get a GTX 670 or 7950 instead. But it's still a powerful card even if it is overpriced.

Edit: For Typo

Just visited my local Heaven. Computer parts everywhere.

They already have the 660 Ti in stock and it's priced equally with the Sapphire HD 7950 OC. One from ASUS and Gigabyte each and they are non-reference, which might justify the pricing.

I think I'll stick to a LeadTek GTX 670 with a reference heatsink and it's cheaper than both.

The 660 Ti seems to be a VERY good card for it's price, as for other cards if you can swing it get the 670.

I have finally bought my new build, not as great as I originally expected, but it will get there eventually.

Note that as of now this is a Gaming Build which will also be used to record gameplay. (My band of November/December upgrades will add to the functionality, Animating and Game Design)

GIGABYTE GA-Z77-DS3H (Had my eye on this for a while) Expandable up to 32GB RAM, 2 PCI Express Slots, Intel, a real beauty.

Intel Core i3-2100 Pretty basic. (I will jump to i7 around November when my hours get raised again.)

Ultra Pro LSP 650W PSU Pretty Basic, a bit extra for later use

Thermaltake V3 Black Edition ATX Mid Tower Case. Yeah.

PNY XLR8 8GB (2 x 4GB) 1600 Was going to go with 4 but went all the way here. (Around December upping to 16).

ZOTAC GeForce GT 440 (Fermi) 1GB Got this a while back, next week I am getting EVGA GTX 550Ti

I shall be using the hard drive from my current computer. 250GB. Until my November/December upgrades.

I have some questions as this is my first fully custom build. Basic questions though.

Recommended Tutorials
Old HDD to new MOBO tips
i3 to i7 jump problems (for the future)
adding an additional HDD later

That kind of thing.
Oh yeah, rate and suggest?

Your GPU in that thing is genuinely awful. You're going to want to upgrade that.

Well thanks to an issue with my bank holding out money for a few days I lowered it from 500 to my original 400 budget. Luckily I beat that budget with some help from discounts and stuff (I had reserves anyways).

It came out to like 397 after tax. I also bought a 10 dollar flash drive. so yeah about 387.

Keep in mind I'm adding a 550ti and also adding the i7 later on. It's a temporary build.

I got these cheeseburgers man....

Why an i7?

  • 08.18.2012 11:30 AM PDT

Who the hell do you think I am?

Yeah, if you're just gaming the most you will ever need is an i5.

But if you're just getting a 550 ti the i3 will be just fine.

Oh....well....you could have gotten a 6670 with that kind of budget.

Also, you only need an i5 for gaming.

I haven't bought a GPU, I had that one. I need the i7 because I will be getting into animation and game design, Adobe Suite is pretty strong. That's later though. Only a week to 550 Ti

My main concern is the Hard Drive though. Will I be able to use the one from my old PC, will I lose the data on it?

You shouldn't but you may want to buy a 1TB hard drive whenever you can upgrade.

Also an awful GPU. :P

As for the hard drive, if it's partitioned into two sections, you won't lose data. (system and data partitions) If it's a single contiguous drive, you'll need to back it up to reinstall the operating system when you change motherboards.

If I got a 660 ti and a i5 3450, what psu should I get?

I'm leaning toward Corsair because everyone seems to get those. But wattage wise...no clue. Would like to SLI down the road (rather than buy the later and greatest to replace it) so I want to keep that in mind too. Is 800 right or too much? Also, enthusiast series?

A 650 watt is all you will need. Just make sure that it's at least 80 Plus Certified, and try to get a modular one if you can.
