No CPU cooler. Crappy brand and low rated HDD. Crappy PSU brand. Terrible graphics card. Paying for Windows.

$600 for that?

I built this rig 3 weeks ago. First one too! :D

HDD: 1 TB 7200 RPM
SDD: 60GB ATA Corsair Force GT
GPU: EVGA GTX 680
PSU: HX1050
Mobo: X79-UD5
Case: Cooler Master Storm Trooper
CPU: Intel i7 3820
RAM: 16 GB DDR3 @ 1600MHz

I've left room for upgrades. Yes, I want to go way overkill. >:3 And yes, my budget was massive.

Fine, YOU come up with something better then. If you can come up with something better, then you can start calling the parts in here crappy and rating the build. Also...this may come as a surprise, but some people don't like to pirate their software. So yes, some people will pay for Windows.

But anyways, come up with a better build for under $600 then you can start 'smack talking.'

To be honest, he's right.
That CPU doesn't come with heatsink fan, nor did you supply a link to an aftermarket cooler.
Also, I'd swap that HDD with a Western Digital.

And a more reliable PSU

I write poetry, I write short-stories, I listen to hip-hop (80s&90s), Reggae, Classic Rock n Roll, Heavy Metal, Jazz, Blues, and the 60s, 70s.

You do realize this is The Flood, right? One of us is bound to blow something up.

I build computers as a side job, but here are some of my builds:

Budget.
My current.
Mid-Tier.
High-End.
Alternative mid-tier.

I've been reading so many errors and bad suggestions in this thread, but it's better to screw up your first time and learn from your mistakes than have me correct you. For anyone who purchases an AMD processor, you're an idiot, as indicated by how cheap my first link is. An i3 will outclass a Phenom any day.

1. Is your HDD a Sata 6.0 with a 64 MB cache?
2. Why didn't you get a Crucial SSD?
3. Why did you get a 680 rather than a 670?
4. You could have easily gone with a 850W PSU.
5. Why did you get the Trooper rather than the 600t?
6. The i7 2600k > i7 3820 if you overclock

Also, I hope to God that you aren't using the stock cooler.

Get 1333MHz instead of 1600MHz RAM if that's what you're going with. There is literally no performance difference other than in synthesised benchmarks, and even then it is only about 3%.
That's complete bull. The step up from 1333 to 1600 is tremendous, probably around 10%. From 1600 to 1866, however, is 2-4%. Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge CPU's work best at 1600, while the older generation CPU's used to run best at 1333.

And this for a ~$500 budget. (Maybe switch to a lesser GPU to save a little more)

I'd appreciate an honest opinion.

1. Yes
2. I felt like it.
3. 670s were released about 3 days before I purchased my 680. The 670s were sold out. And my budget was almost unrestricted.
4. Yes, but I'll be chucking in another 680 in the future.
5. I prefer the aesthetics of the Storm Trooper, and it has a handle on the top, making it excellent for moving.
6. The i7 3820 uses an LGA2011 socket, meaning if I ever feel the need to upgrade to an Ivy Bridge-E processor, I don't need to replace the motherboard.

There are a few things that I would change, like the case to an Antec 300, or the GPU to a 6850. I'll just make a new one:

Here. You'll just have to find a means of acquiring an operating system. Down the road, you'll probably want to upgrade the motherboard.

Alright, thanks.
As for the OS, I'll probably use Ubuntu like I am now and wait a while before I get W7. Wine should be enough for running the games I have.

Basically, it's no different than if you bought it, but I'd rather not discuss those things here.

It's pointless to try to future-proof a computer. You could have saved yourself a lot of money by getting an i7 2600k and a Z68 or Z77 board. Those alone would last you a good five years by themselves, and after that time, they'll be way beyond 2011 sockets.

Recommend me a laptop hard drive. Preferably 500GB+ and able to ship to Australia. I don't want SSD. SATA connection.

Something I noticed here... If you have extra to spend get around a $50 sound card. A headset is ONLY as good a the sound card you are using. It can make a world's difference with a high end headset like my Astro.

Get a cheaper GPU (6770) and upgrade the processor and PSU. Or spend more money because you are very limited with that CPU and PSU. An extra $75 can make a worlds difference

I respectfully disagree.

2600k vs 3820, let's see.

2600k:
-3.4GHz
-8MB Cache
-Idles @ 40C, 60C @ full load
-Supports dual channel memory
-$330

3820:
-3.6GHz
-10MB Cache
-Idles @ 20C-25C, 50C @ full load
-Supports quad channel memory (double the bandwith, and double the max memory of the 1155 socket)
-$300

And the way Intel seems to be going, they'll be making more hexa-cores for the 2011 socket.
That, plus the quad channel memory means you'd probably save yourself a motherboard on your next build.

So, as for the processors compared side by side, the 3820 is cheaper, will last longer, and is more powerful than the 2600k.

The only benefit of going with a 1155 socket is that the mobo would be a bit cheaper (but it's highly unlikely you'd use it on another build later on).

Just the way I see things.
