It's pointless to try to future-proof a computer. You could have saved yourself a lot of money by getting an i7 2600k and a Z68 or Z77 board. Those alone would last you a good five years by themselves, and after that time, they'll be way beyond 2011 sockets.I respectfully disagree.
2600k vs 3820, let's see.
2600k:
-3.4GHz
-8MB Cache
-Idles @ 40C, 60C @ full load
-Supports dual channel memory
-$330
3820:
-3.6GHz
-10MB Cache
-Idles @ 20C-25C, 50C @ full load
-Supports quad channel memory (double the bandwith, and double the max memory of the 1155 socket)
-$300
And the way Intel seems to be going, they'll be making more hexa-cores for the 2011 socket.
That, plus the quad channel memory means you'd probably save yourself a motherboard on your next build.
So, as for the processors compared side by side, the 3820 is cheaper, will last longer, and is more powerful than the 2600k.
The only benefit of going with a 1155 socket is that the mobo would be a bit cheaper (but it's highly unlikely you'd use it on another build later on).
Just the way I see things.
