I came for Halo, but I heard the Tru7h, fought thru Carnage, and stayed for Bungie.

I just built a computer today. The computer I am replacing it with I built back in 2005 around the AMD FX-60 chip, which is about the last high end chip AMD made.

This time I went with Intel i7 3770k

Intel i7 3770k (3.5ghz) Quad Core
ASUS p8z77 pro motherboard
16gb Corsair Vengance 1600mhz RAM
WD solid state 512gb hard drive
XFX Geforce 680 graphics card.
Blu ray player

Kept the same 27 inch monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

I've been checking stability today and so far so good.

Oh, I'm sticking with Windows 7.
Why so much overkill?

It't better to have it now then not need it, than to need it and not have it.
Other than the 16GB of RAM he has, I don't see a need for the 680, and the i7 is justifiable if he's doing lots of photo and video editing. Other than that, its overkill.

If he is really doing photo editing, then along with the i7 the extra CUDA cores in the 680 and the extra RAM could be helpful too.

If only people would state what they do with their computers when they post.

Where would I post something having to do with what gaming monitors I should buy, I'm looking at the Asus Vh236h and the Asus Vh238h coming from gaming on a 19" Sylvania Lc195sl9? Would I see a difference in how well I play?

Also, I my motherboard died from what this techy guy told me and every time I turn on the computer the monitor said's no signal, I tried VGA and so did the other guy.

What would be a affordable motherboard that could just get the computer going again and be reliable? I don't need a "suped up" awesome gaming motherboard, I just want something to browse the web and watch Twitch. Does it depend on the other parts of the computer? I'm not that computer smart and wanted to ask you guys.

Are you sure it's the motherboard that's broken?

First off, does the computer turn on at all?
Second, does you have a video card AND onboard video on the motherboard, and if so, have you tried them both?

And who is this "tech" guy? It's very easy to have any part be broken on your computer and just say it's the motherboard. It could very well be anything else.

You're like a slinky. Good for nothing, but you bring a smile to my face when I push you down the stairs.

How's this build for an entry level computer? I'm gonna upgrade the processor and GPU eventually (I have or will be getting a 650 to start out with).

Build

I already have the PSU and the Case, so don't worry about that.

Here's a much better one: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/k3RP Although I left out the OS, so I'm not sure what you want to do about that.

I couldn't afford that if I got an OS. What do you think about the build that I posted? Tight budget so that's why the processor is sub-par for now. Hey, still 0.8GHz faster than my current core 2 duo...

Yeah, it's fine. But get the 7770 instead of the 650. It costs the same and performs better than the 650 in most games.

I thought physX only worked on Nvidia GPUs, I just turned it on in Borderlands 2 and it works for some reason

is it working off my CPU?

  • 10.11.2012 6:12 PM PDT

Who the hell do you think I am?

It works on AMD cards too, it's just NVIDIA cards have a dedicated physx engine so it gets better stability and performance when you use it.

And yeah, it might be working off your CPU because of that.

I've never seen anyone game with a Pentium before.

But it'll still work, right? It'll be some time before I could upgrade the processor.

That memory might be a bit overkill. You could probably go with something less expensive and not even notice a difference.

What is your total budget for the CPU, Mobo, RAM, HDD, GPU, optical drive, and OS? Basically the tower sans case and PSU.

I don't think the RAM's an overkill. It's actually quite cheap for 8GBs of DDR3 1600 MHz RAM.

I have never used Vsynch in my life except to try it out, and I found it annoying. It's the fault of your monitor, not your computer. Buy a better monitor.

I'm using a HDTV I actually prefer horizontal tears if it means getting closer to 1:1 mouse movement

besides I don't even notice it while I'm playing, only when I'm looking for it

I game with v-sync on in all games I play.

I just hate the tearing.

Not a dedicated PhysX engine but PhysX calculations are done via the card's CUDA cores. In fact, you can get a cheap and old NVIDIA card (lets say the 8800 GTX for example) and it can be relegated for PhysX processing.

Not sure if they AMD can pull it off with OpenCL.

Oh yeah, I saw some guys build the other day with a 680 or some later 6xx series card, and he SLI'd it with a 470. I believe that's what he was doing.

The 680 can't fully utilize all 4GB of VRAM because of its 192 GB/sec memory bandwidth. You'd be a lot better off buying a $380 670 with 2GB since they're pretty much the same.
