EDIT: Oh are you saying that if I follow fluffies method, there will be remnants of XP? Does that matter?
Yes, exactly. There will still be some registry entries, etc. leftover. You will probably never run into any problems, though, it's just a personal preference I have.

I would create a USB/DVD installer anyway, even if you plan to just do the upgrade from inside your old OS. Else: If something goes wrong during the install, you will have to reinstall XP and then redownload the image.

He can just delete the Windows.old folder and run CCleaner.

You're like a slinky. Good for nothing, but you bring a smile to my face when I push you down the stairs.

So I follow these steps:
Put XP ISO on 1 tb hdd
Wipe 400gb had
boot from 1tb hdd
Install XP on it, enter key
Go to Microsoft site after installation is done
Get windows 8 upgrade

Success?

That's what I would do, yes. However, you'll need to make sure that you have the correct bit version of XP (I would assume 64 but you never know) and can burn it to a CD. You can use a USB drive as well, but it doesn't really matter. Just be sure to make your backups.

I have 32 bit. My processor is 64 bit however. I don't think XP comes in 64 bit?

There's a 64-bit version of XP but it has barely any support for drivers that it's not worth it.

Thanks for reading my signature!

Anyone know anything about Nvidia 3D Vision?

I'm after a 32" or more display that will support it, I don't really get if it has to be a 3D display or not. Some people say any 120Hz screen will work, so long as it is true 120Hz refresh rate, and not the thing that most HDTV's have which is something to do with waiting for 2 frames then mixing them.

Well I'd assume that any 3D monitor would work with it, otherwise I don't see the point in buying a monitor for 3D that can't even output 3D. Unless you're actually looking for a 3D TV, and not a 3D monitor, you're probably not gonna find a monitor that's 32". A 3D tv though, will probably be a lot more than 32", and will cost you quite a bit, while a 3D monitor could cost you anywhere from 200 and up.

If I buy a touch screen monitor, it would just be a monitor right? Like it wouldn't be a touch screen all in one?

If it's advertised as a touchscreen monitor, it'll be a monitor not an all-in-one.

You should be able to easily tell by looking at the details from where ever you're buying it from.

Another thing, does anyone know where the cheapest place to get Windows 7 is? I want to know just in case 8 totally backfires on me, but I'm pretty sure it won't.

Went through my monitor settings and there's a toggle to select between PC and AV mode.

What is the difference between these two modes?

I would assume AV means RCA cables, unless you're talking about video settings, in which RCA cables would imply a console, which would imply sitting a further distance away from the monitor, and thus the saturation would increase to provide more contrast.

Well, my monitor only supports HDMI and D-sub inputs.

I thought you said you could get W7 for free if you didn't like W8?

Steam Autumn sale might start tomorrow.

  • 11.20.2012 2:32 PM PDT

I know this isn't about PC Building directly but it is relevant.
I need a good Computer Desk with a lot of Work space, preferably with a keyboard slide, and enough space for 3+ monitors.

Any recommendations?

I want to upgrade maybe one of my GPUs and definitely my CPU. I'm going to be animating and rendering, for that I need a good CPU. RAM is good enough. Any recommendations?

Hurr

For a desk, Ikea Galant.

For a CPU, an i7 will do. For a GPU you could get an Nvidia Quadro or an ATI Firepro graphics card. If you want to render and game, get a high end ATI card (because you're using 3 monitors).

An i7 2600k would give you your best bang-to-buck ratio, although it lacks the 40-lane PCI support that an Ivy (3770k) would have. I'd go with the Ivy if you have the money.

For the GPU, AMD handles multi-monitors better. A 7970 would be perfect, again, if you have the money.

the flood, there a bunch of jerks, but there my jerks.

Would this work with my HAF X case and my ASUS Maximus V MOBO? I'm confident the length will work, but will the USB headers themselves work? If I remember correctly one of you guys has a HAF X.

And do any of you foresee problems occurring with my computer (linky), a monitor or two, connected to this surge protector? Any surge protector that is better that is similarly priced?

I thought only sandy bridge-e had the 40 PCIe lanes. I've never seen a Z77 board having more than x8x8 in SLI or crossfire.

The P8Z77 WS runs 8x8x8x8x, the Extreme Z77 runs 16x8x8x8x, and probably a few other boards I can't think of. ;D
