Alienware can barely run current gen games at 30 fps on medium settings. Avoid them like the plague. Go ASUS, Acer, Lenovo, or MSI.

I got these cheeseburgers man....

Just curious, but why do you want a gaming laptop? You could get a desktop for 900 and it'd be way more powerful.

I don't care if the laptop is incredibly bulky or anything like that at all. But I do travel a lot and can't use a desktop most of the time because of it. I don't care how big the computer is as long as I can put it in a backpack.

As an owner of an Alienware I can say that this man is correct.

Then just buy one of the brands PMC listed above. Im really not sure what to look for in gaming laptops, so I cant be of much help.

That's what Wargamer linked. Is that capable of running games like Skyrim or Crysis 2 or whatever perfectly? Again, dun really care about ultra settings. Just playing the games without any lag... ever.

But that one, from the link Wargamer gave me on the last page, I looked it all up and total, including Microsoft Office, came to $918.

While that's good, I really would recommend putting W7 on it, simply because Windows 8 seems too cluttered for gaming, plus, I've read that some games run worse in Windows 8 over Windows 7. Even I won't be using Windows 8 in my gaming desktop, even though I love it on my laptop.

That's just my recommendation though.

Mine is also a Y580 and they have almost the same specs. It doesn't really matter which one you get to be honest. Mine doesn't list the res for some reason, so it's probably 1366x768. I'd grab the one from the Lenovo website since that one is definitely 1080p.

Also, you're purchasing Microsoft Office? Lol.

As far as the two laptops that are on the Lenovo page go, higher resolution will look better but perform worse. It would also have a lower battery life, but if you're gaming, you should always have your laptop plugged into the wall.

Benchmarks.

Xbox LIVE gamertag: Dat3lessNutella
Steam username: TopWargamer
To look up my Halo stats...search for the gamertag TopWargamer.
SAVED THREAD PAGES: 283
One does not simply get rid of TopWargamer so easily.
You know this to be true.
ALL HAIL GABEN

Here's the CPU, GPU, and RAM in my laptop:
2nd gen i7 2630QM @2.0GHz
Nvidia 460M
6GB of RAM

With these specs I can play...Battlefield 3 for example at full HD (1920x1080) with medium textures at 30 FPS.

So with these specs on the Lenovo....you will be able to play on higher textures than me and get better FPS.

My laptop can already play any game....so this Lenovo can as well....even better than mine.

Coooooool. Thanks folks.
I think I'ma lose the awesome 40% deal here, but hopefully around the holidays when I have more spare cash a good deal will return.

While we're talking about laptops...

My parents want to get my sister a laptop this Christmas. She mostly plays on Minecraft (lol), but sometimes on Sims (lololol).

What is the best NEW laptop they can get, and the best USED laptop they can get. Max price $500.

You're like a slinky. Good for nothing, but you bring a smile to my face when I push you down the stairs.

I have a bad computer and windows 8 hasn't affected performance for any of my games. Ultimately it's up to you if you want 8 or 7, but I recommend 8.

As a person who used to play minecraft on a laptop that cost $400, I can safely say that it will get -blam!- performance on anything in that price range.

Never buy used laptops. You never know what people have done on them, even if you wipe the HDD.

And it wouldn't be able to have a dGPU, so I can't make any suggestions.

Even though you say that, benchmarks say otherwise. I'm too lazy to look them up right now, but I remember Toms Hardware had an article on it.

What do you guys think of these three parts? I want to game on them and I don't intend on overclocking the CPU. Will a stock fan work fine for the processor if I have a bunch of fans pre-installed in my case and good airflow?

  • 11.24.2012 2:50 PM PDT

The stock fan will be fine, but super loud. Just be aware that your CPU doesn't have integrated graphics.

Mobo and RAM are fine, but do you plan on overclocking to 1866?

Why that CPU?

It's an i5 and it's above 3.0GHz and I assume that's enough for games?

  • 11.24.2012 2:54 PM PDT

I don't think Windows 8 is such a big deal. If you have it already, then it's fine. You wouldn't want to upgrade to it from Windows 7, but if a laptop already has it then it's perfectly alright.

Yeah, but iirc, they performed worse than other i5s, and for a little bit more money, you could get a better CPU.

So I saw this Motherboard on Newegg for a crazy deal and was wondering if it was any good. I was recommended thisone and was wondering how it compared. Any help would be much appreciated.
