Hey guys! My friend referred me to this forum, so I thought i'd check it out. Everyone here seems like they seriously know their stuff, and I was curious if I could glean some of that knowledge.

I'm looking at maybe building a new desktop (which I would have to research how to build, of course-though the youtube link on the first page was helpful)
My ultimate budget is/will probably end up being around $400-500, though I could wait a little longer to save some money. Basically, it's a "bang-for-my-buck" desktop.
I'd like to have a processor on-par (or close) to an Intel i5, and an average dedicated graphics card that can handle moderate games (like Skyrim on medium resolution settings)
Most of what i'd be doing is general computing + some more intensive programs and games

I'm not picky about the rest of what's required, just that it's all compatible with each other (of course).

I'd love some feedback on any kind of build any of you guys can come up with, and look forward to learning something!
-Thanks!

With that kind of budget It would be better to go with an AMD processor or an I3.
Also can you get your OS for free? http://www.dreamspark.com/Student/Default.aspx?tab=2#TabbedPa nels1 go to this site and type in the name of the school you attend. If your school pays for this then you will be able to get a free copy of Windows 7, or windows 8.

$400-500? Does that include a monitor and OS? If it does, that's a bare destitute computer, you won't be able to do any gaming without the lowest settings. What intensive programs are you looking to do? IMO, $600 is the lowest you should spend on hardware, not including the cost of your OS. But if the $400-500 doesn't include the price of your OS and monitor, then you should be able to get an ok computer, not really that good, but not that bad.

At your price range, you're better off with a laptop.

If your budget includes an operating system and monitor/keyboard/mouse, etc, AND an i5 (which will not happen on your $500 budget), you might as well just get an 360.

I didn't see him mention that... In that Case he should just go on craigslist and see if he can get a semi decent one for cheap.

He didn't mention that, but we're just assuming right now that he does, since he seems to be getting into the PC market.

That's a very good build for his budget. The only thing I would change is the hard drive, why a laptop one? Change it to one of the $50 1TB seagates on Newegg.

Oh, apparently it just ended. It was going on yesterday. I would at least change it to some other 3.5" drive.

I run my 1600 MHz RAM at 1333 MHz.

To be honest, while I was running it at 1600 MHz, I didn't that much of a difference when I run it at 1333 MHz.
