So, if the Dual Channel ram isn't in every other slot, it won't boot right? They can't be next top each-other?

Nope

If you're only going to be using 2 DIMM slots, here's the order you HAVE TO put your RAM in:

Slots 1 and 3
or
Slots 2 and 4

It'll say in your motherboard manual and it will usually designate on the board where you have to put the RAM.

Okay, that probably explains why it didn't work.

Thanks!

More room for that aftermarket heat sink.

But it do.

I so far have my case, RAM, HDD and OS, DVD drive, PSU and GPU. All that's left is the mobo and CPU which my parents are buying for me for Christmas.

My manual explicitly stated in bold print that if you only have two sticks, use slots 2 and 4. I have an ASUS P8Z68-v Pro, which is high-end though.

The manual says Slots 1 and 3 and Slots 2 and 4 are for dual channel but it does recommend 2 and 4.

No reason to swap it because my RAM works fine.

Hey guys.

You all helped me build my rig in July/August. Now that I've had it a few months, how and when should I think about cleaning it? How often do I check for dust build-up, etc?

Open the case and check for any dust build-up in the heatsinks an fans.

Clean the internals with compressed air. Remember to hold the fans whilst spraying as overspinning the fans may wear it out.

Some of the Z77 Gigabyte boards do not distinguish the slots by colour.

What's the difference between Z77 and Z68 (not necessarily these two specifically)?

When making a pre-build, I've always used a Z77 motherboard because...actually I dunno why. :/

Z68 is an older chipset for Sandy Bridge. It does work with Ivy Bridge CPUs.

Intel's 7 Series chipsets have built-in USB 3.0 controllers.

Could anyone explain why my mouse and keyboard randomly stop working? The computer didn't freeze as I was listening to some music and it kept on playing and I plugged in the keyboard into a different USB socket and it worked.

It's definitely not the ports since I plugged in a USB flash drive into the same port and it worked just fine.

I'd assume the drivers fail somehow but I'm pretty sure those are generic drivers for keyboards and mice. However, I have a Logitech gaming mouse and I have drivers from Logitech for that.

On some Z68 motherboards I think you have to update the BIOS in order for it to work properly for Ivy Bridge.

I was considering upgrading my motherboard to the P8Z68, but I think I'll wait for a couple years to get Haswell, since Broadwell or whatever it is coming after it will possibly be soldered onto the motherboards, but who knows.

The 2011 socket Broadwell CPUs won't be soldered onto the motherboard.

Looks like socket 2011 is the new gaming standard! Lol

Socket 2011 is that monster i7 socket, right? Possibly future intel processors as well?
