Is AMD really that bad compared to modern intel?
No, AMD offers good price for performance and are great for budget builds or general use, but typically Intel CPUs perform much better for single-threaded tasks (like most games), and Intel usually performs better for multi-core tasks too. You can find plenty of benchmarks through google, or you can use anandtech.com

Yes and no

They're highest end CPU (FX-8350) is as powerful as a 3570K. Which is obviously a good thing. But the thing is that, that is AMD's highest end CPU which is the equivalent to a mid tier Intel CPU. AMD's CPUs can't even touch Intels high high end CPUs.

So like I said....AMD is NOT a bad CPU maker....but they're not the best either.

And by budget, he means spending less than $150 on the CPU and motherboard together.

IIRC, Intel does better at single threaded programs, while AMD does better at multithreaded programs. AMD did have really bad architecture before, but they're starting to improve.

Hello, I need some help with a good screen.
I use a TV that is hooked up to my PC, XBOX, and Cable, and am thinking about getting an upgrade.
Anyway I'm looking for a good HDTV for relatively cheap, around about 20". Just something with a good screen that will make games run gorgeous. Any help would be much appreciated. :)
Why a TV? You could get a 1080p 20-23" monitor for the same price or less as a 20inch 720p TV.

Not even, the 3570k out-performs the 8350 in most games. Only in a few programs or instances will the 8350 be better. And you can easily overclock the 8320 to 8350 speeds.

But even then, architecture >>> clock speeds. Going from Sandy first gen to Sandy second gen proves that. The i5 2500k could outclass the i7 960.

But it's different with AMD. The only thing the last two numbers in the FX line differentiate is the clock speed, so the 8320 and the 8350 are essentially the same thing, one just has a higher clock speed.

But it do.

Should I get the 670 FTW or its AMD equivalent? I'll only use one monitor...and I have a 600w PSU. So if my psi isnt large enough, what's the best I can get?

  • 12.04.2012 7:36 PM PDT

I hit the "clr cmos" buttn on my ASRock Z77 Extreme4, and it lit up red and the fans and lights will go for a sec and then stop. It repeats and I can't stop it no matter what I do.

This is extremely frustrating.

Pretty sure that your PSU is juuust large enough...

And likewise with the i3 2100 and 2120, or the 2600k and 2700k. I'm just saying that being able to overclock it to another's speed doesn't matter because they have the same architecture.

It depends on what games you play. If you play BF3, source games, or edit videos / images / 3d rendering, get the 670. If you plan on adding another monitor later, getting a larger one, or play Crysis a lot, get the 7950.

GPU's only use 200-250W at load. Even a 500W PSU would be just enough for that.

7. I'm using 8 right now, and after coming from W7, it feels like it'll be a lot better experience on a desktop. Plus, some games perform better on it.

Windows 7. W8 has a lot of issues with older (pre-2007) games.

Bummer to hear this stuff about W8. I was looking forward to getting it when I (eventually) build a PC. Who knows though. W17 may be out by then and it'd all be moot. :P

If Microsoft follows their patterns for the past ten years, W9 will be worth the upgrade.

I was put off AMD by the horror stories tbh.

Overheating, DOA, Lack of Drivers, Bad drivers...

I did my research and opted Intel. Glad I did.

You can easily save $10-15 on RAM. These are similar to what you've picked out.

You power supply is only 380 watts? Your going to need 550-600 watts to run this machine. You can save some on RAM, and if you plan on over clocking I would get the 2500k or the 3570k instead. If you don't then you can stick with the 2500, but I would look at the 3550(These are all i5 btw).
