AMD or Intel processor for video rendering? I am talking about rendering out after effects and 3DS Max files.

Depends, how much are you willing to spend?

I have about an $1800 budget for my computer but if I can I'd like to spend less (around $1500 maybe?). I'm not buying until around March so if anything comes out by then I can wait.

Here is my build so far. This is not anywhere near complete yet. I'm buying the mouse, keyboard, and monitor later.

You have to link your wishlist another way, when I tried the link it didn't link to yours. (Nevermind, I see it now)

Anyway, if you are doing some serious rendering, then this would probably be what you want: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/rv4q

Tell me if you need any peripherals or an OS, and I'll find some way to cut the cost back. If you will be doing a lot more gaming, you can go down to a 3820, lesser CPU cooler, and less RAM and fit two 7970s in there. So decide what's more important to you.

That CPU is a little ways off my budget. I fixed the link for my build if you wanted to take a look. The only thing I need left is my OS (Windows 8 most likely). I was also thinking of RAID 0.

For $1800 with the build you linked, a single 660ti and 1155 socket is very odd. That is also an unnecessarily expensive motherboard for a 660ti.

I was able to fit in two 7970s for around the same price as yours, except it's just a standard disc drive and no 64GB SSD. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/rvfw

Actually, you might need a bigger case for the two graphics cards: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/rvhr

All my friends have told me to go for NVIDIA as they have had problems with the drivers for Raedeons. I'd much rather just have one single NVDIA card (either 660ti or 670). Now that I think about it though that mother board is a bit expensive. Any that you recommend? Keep in mind I am trying to keep a black/red theme if I can.

There aren't any more problems with AMD drivers than there would be with NVIDIA drivers.

Anyway: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/rvmr

Single 670 FTW, 256GB SSD, it has a 3570k but you can up it to a 3770k if you think you'll need it for your rendering programs. I left the case out for you to pick.

If you want a more black motherboard then switch it to this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168131572 93&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-n a-_-na&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

I updated the motherboard on mine. It's about $100 less but for the socket type that price range was that I could find.

The Z68 chipset was meant for Sandy Bridge CPUs, to even use it with the 3770k you would have to do a bios update.

I don't see what's wrong with the build I just linked you (this.) It costs $500 less, without the case, and it has a 256GB SSD. And you don't need a 900W PSU, your build will likely never use more than 550W at the most.

Here's my two cents.

You don't need the X79 chipset since you aren't running SLI and the extra two cores won't do much. The 3770k OC's a lot further which would make all of your four cores run faster, which is much more beneficial.

As for your build, you don't need that huge HSF. It isn't all that great anyways. Definitely get my RAM instead, and swap the case. You can get the 3TB Seagate but if it fails, you'll lose a lot more data. If you don't need a lot of space, get two 1TB's because they will run faster than one 3TB.

I updated my build with some parts from yours. I removed the motherboard entirely. Really, the main thing I don't like about yours, is that it looks like it will bottleneck since the graphics card and the CPU are far more expensive (plus it doesn't keep with the black/red theme). As for the SSD I wanted to RAID 0 so I need two SSDs. I don't know if 64GB is enough for that though. What do you think is a good size?

Price =/= performance.

The GPU will ALWAYS be the bottleneck in games. The CPU will ALWAYS be the bottleneck in video rendering.

Color themes are not worth reduced performance / higher prices.

128GB is the MINIMUM you want for an SSD. It should suit your needs fine though.

Supposedly the 3820 overclocks better since it has a larger heatspreader. If you buy the 3820 from Microcenter it's $90 off, and with that $90 saved you could move from the $130 ASRock Extreme 4 to the $210 ASRock X79 Extreme6. With the 8 DIMM slots, 40 PCIe lines and the upgradeable path of the 2011 socket, it really makes a lot more sense to get those than their LGA1155 equivalent components. It especially makes a lot more sense if you're going to drop $300 or $400 on the motherboard.

I should have said this before but I need a firewire port. My camcorder only has firewire.

Also do you know if any of this is at Best Buy? I highly doubt it but if it is I work at Best Buy so I should be able to get a discount.

What about this motherboard? I guess I can just get a PCI firewire port.

It will be bottlenecked? What will be? The GPU is the exact same as yours, and if you're only gaming then there is no performance difference between the 3570 and the 3770. If you're doing rendering you can easily fit in the 3770k into the build I linked you with your budget. And I don't know why you would want to raid two 64GB SSDs when you can just get one 256GB SSD (that's even the same price)

The motherboard is fine. But keep in mind it's a Micro ATX, which is somewhat limited on PCI slots. It also seems a little too expensive.

And no, by the time DDR4 comes out it will be very expensive, so you would have to wait a couple years to get reasonable prices on them, and keep in mind they'll have to make new motherboards to support it too.

I didn't see that it was a micro-ATX. My case should be able to fit a ATX (I'll likely just change it back to the ATX-XL case since it's only like $30 more) so I'll change the motherboard.

edit: What about now?

Yeah, it's fine.

The only drawback to is it has PCIe 3.0 x16 on the top slot, but the second PCIe slot is 2.0 x16 @ x4 speeds, so don't expect to be using any video card down there.

The only ones in stock on Newegg are the 840s. Any thoughts on that motherboard I linked you? Also any idea on when DDR4 is coming out and if it will be worth the price by the time I buy my desktop?[/quote]The motherboard is fine.

As long as it can run at least one 670 I'm good. I doubt I'll ever use two graphics cards.

Don't need the monitor right now. I'm going to be buying that later. I want to have dual screens with possibly three screens in the future.
