Who the hell do you think I am?

Here's my build for you.

Don't need the monitor right now. I'm going to be buying that later. I want to have dual screens with possibly three screens in the future.
Do you plan to play games with all three monitors?

No. It's mainly for video editing. The three screen isn't very likely though. The dual screen is but that will be for video editing. If I can game on dual screens that fine but I'm not spending too much more money for it.

Alright, but when you so buy it, I'd recommend that one. Other than that, what'd you think of the build?

I wanted a blu-ray player/DVD burner and I wanted to keep the black/red theme. Aside from that most of what you posted I already have in my build.

Why exactly do you want a blu-ray drive?

not worth it

Exactly. It's rare I find people with blu-ray drives anymore. When I go to my friends, I just bring the video on a USB, put it into their laptop, and they plug it into their TV via HDMI. Just get a DVD writer, there's really no point to spend 100ish on a optical media drive.

What if he wants to rip Blu ray movies? I'd love to just take my blu rays and put them on my computer and devices...need a blue ray ray writer/burner for that.

not worth it

and I'd think blu-ray would have some copyright protection protocols or something on them

even so

if the only reason you could justify buying a blu ray was to use it illegally, that's pretty stupid

Still, that extra $80ish he'd be spending could be put towards components that actually make a difference. You could always just... download the movie? Seriously, blu-rays are almost outdated now-a-days.

How so? Gotta watch movies on the TV somehow. Especially new releases, unless you're lucky enough to get it from Netflix right away.

Downloadable movies don't have near the quality that blu-ray offers...

I'll never understand why some people are so incredibly anti-disc nowadays. They still have their uses.

Blu-ray drives are only like $80. That's really not that expensive.

compared to $10 yes they are

$70 could get you a better graphics card or a better processor

Honestly

All optical drives are really there for me to install my OS and my drivers, and even those are only if I have no internet to install better drivers

Everything else I can download

If I count the times I've used my optical drive other than using it for OS install and basic drivers, that's twice I've used it

If you're downloading legally, then yes, they do have just as good. If you're downloading illegally, then you're just picking bad torrents. I'm not really anti-disk, it's more the fact that most of my friends or family use pre-builts or laptops, and those rarely have a blu-ray drive in them. DVDs are a lot better option, since most everything has a DVD drive.

Really? Because I got my HDD for $80, and a HDD is way more important than a blu-ray drive.. I could buy my RAM, CPU cooler, and DVD drive for $80. That's 3 parts for the price of one. $80 could be the difference between a 7950 and a 7970, or a 670 and a 680, which are by far way more important.

So my Aunt wants to get me something for my PC build for Christmas. $25 or under, what could she get?

Could she spend $30? If she can, she could get you a Hyper 212 EVO. If not, have her get a DVD drive.

The DVD drives I have seen are around $20 and I found a decent blu-ray drive for around $55. That's like a $30. I might be able to buy a 680 but honestly the 670 is already enough for me (hell the 660ti was enough for me but you guys said it wouldn't make sense if I am going all out).

Is a fan controller worth it?

I already have a DVD drive :/ And she has to get stuff for the rest of the family too so $25 is it. Maybe some green fans to match my peripherals?

Then uh... I really don't know. I guess some fans then, but those don't really seem necessary. Maybe she could get you a giftcard or money to put towards a game or another part? Oh yeah! Maybe a flashdrive like Thirsty said!

Whatever man, it's your money, you waste it on what you want. We're just telling you the best option, it's your choice if you want to follow the advice or not.

Then up your processor

  • 12.08.2012 8:02 PM PDT

Who the hell do you think I am?

How do you power all of this?

I thought they were 7990s at first but they're apparently four 580s. Still pretty ridiculous.

Wait a minute, are those four 7990s?...

There's now way you can power all of those, it should be impossible. Just one of those cards draws at least 400W.

Uhh no

When you calculate the initial power taken from a GPU you factor in all the other parts

1 GPU could be about 650 watts

But that also powers the processor, hard drive, ram, etc

Adding another could be probably another 200-300 watts

So then you would only need about 800-900

You can also downclock them

If you add another 400-600 watts, that would only be 1200-1400 watts

They sell 2000 watt PSUs you know

I'm not sure where you're getting these numbers. The GPU doesn't power the whole system, the CPU does. The GPU just processes the graphics since that's what the GPU was built for. To power not only the main board, CPU, water cooling radiators and the fact that each of those 4 graphics cards takes three 8-pin connectors, you would likely need two 1000W or 1200W PSUs.

Even if it didn't take more than 2000W, there still aren't any power supplies with more than like, 6 8-pin connectors at the most. Let alone 12 of them.
