The cables are definately correct.

I dont need drivers for it just to basically display, do I? Because Windows, isnt installed.

Maybe just re-wire and re-put in the video card?

I dunno....i'm just throwing stuff out there.

Did you make sure you were plugging the DVI-to-VGA into the DVI-I output?

Are you sure that the GPU is seated correctly?

  • 12.09.2012 7:04 PM PDT

Yes to everything.

I'm starting to think it's DoA.

Yeah, the Kepler cards have DVI-I and DVI-D outputs.

Make sure you hook up the DVI to VGA adapter to the lower DVI port.

Is there anything better for around the same price as the AMD FX-8350? The primary function of the PC I'm building will be AutoCAD, Revit and Photoshop.

There's the Core i5 3570K, price is a bit less than the FX-8350.

Actually, the price difference is $5 from Neweggg.

Comparing it to the i7-2670QM, which is what my laptop is packing, which would you say is better for the mentioned applications?

Since your laptop has an i7, it has HyperThreading. Not sure if those applications could take advantage of HyperThreading.

But since it's a desktop CPU, it will preform better than your mobile i7.

From what I can remember, they don't use it very much, if at all.

I just don't want to end up with a desktop that's less powerful than my laptop. I'm certain the i5 has better single-core performance, though. The i7 is at a measly 2.2 GHz.

I suppose it'll preform better. Yours could be a ULV processor.

I did this quickly. The only advantage the i7 seems to have is the hyper threading, but seeing as how the applications rarely use hyperthreading, the i5 is definitely superior.

Thanks for the help.

No problem!

Good luck on your build.

My original build was AMD, so I'm looking for a motherboard. Any recommendations? Needs to be microATX. 16gb RAM, 2 RAM slots.

The rest is irrelevant to me, as it's gonna be pretty basic. I'm putting in two 4GB DDR3-1600 sticks. The 16GB minimum is for possible future upgrades.

Any recommendations? Preferably something reliable but as cheap as possible. Currently in Canada.

Gigabyte B75M-D3H
ASRock B75M-GL
Or this, H77 Pro 4-M

@Shock - The $299 one.

I'll go with the ASRock, thanks.

edit: And finally, I'm looking for a PC case that is no more than 16" or 405mm deep with the most airflow as possible.

SST-SG02B-F
FBM-02

They're both possibilities right now, but I'm not sure about their airflow. I'd be willing to go with an open type case as well. Whatever can get me in that depth range without causing overheating. Looking at a absolute max of 100$.

Found this too.

How do you find out if games on Steam support controllers? Some say "partial controller compatibility" but that's pretty vague.

If I get a PC, I'm pretty much only going to use a controller (the XBOX one) since I'm just dreadful at moving around using W A S D. And I do mean dreadful.

I'd really hate to buy a game and then find out it doesn't support controllers (or it does, but not the XBOX one)

This looks great.

I'm having a hard time judging whether my video card will fit though. Any help with that?

My build

Well the Vapor has a higher boost clock speed, and I think has really good cooling. Not sure what's special about the Flex one though.

Alright, so help me out here, guys.
I had this amazing PC build set up, ran it past a few of the PC builder-experts on here, and had it all ready to go e-shopping...when I apparently lost the file I had saved it all to.

So anyways, can anyone set me up a good gaming rig for somewhere around $1500-$1700? Disregard the mouse, keyboard, and monitor, please. I only care about the tower for the time being.

And yes, this PC should be oriented around gaming.

Good, good... I recommend picking up the 3820 at microcenter, since it's almost $100 off there.

I was gonna tell you that my build was mATX as opposed to miniITX, but then I realized the only thing that had been holding me back from miniITX was that, originally, my processor was AMD.

Thanks!

edit: Now that I'm switching over to miniITX, can anybody re-suggest me a motherboard.
