You can't really tell whether or not something is better by clock speed or by number of cores, unfortunately. Not brand vs. brand, anyway. If it was AMD vs AMD or Intel vs Intel, you could make safer assumptions, but AMD and Intel processors have completely different architecture to one another. It's like comparing an orange and an apple. They're both fruit, both similar shape, but they taste completely different and have completely different textures.

Bloody Hyper 212 Plus is absolutely stupid. There is a tiny black component part of the underside of the mobo actually interfering with the placement of the bottom plate. On top of that, the "bolts" which pass through the holes on the bottom plate (the bracket-like piece on the underside of the mobo) don't fit properly at all; it's extremely hard to pass them through.

Very disappointed.

The standoff does not pass through the hole on the bracket.

I even bought the Hyper 212 Plus and watched that video...

So how would I mount it?

I'm looking to update my CPU. I've a Vostro 420, current processor is Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E7500 @ 2.93 GHz. 32-bit Vista.

Thanks.

Apparently there's a flat side to the standoff, which solves my passing through problem. The instructions are awful.

But that doesn't solve the fact that I can't actually make bracket flat to the bottom of the mobo, because there's a tiny black component siding under of of the "arms"

Does this sound like a good build for emulators?

2.6 ghz quad core
1gb 128 bit videocard
8 gb ram

Those are some very general specs you got there.

What are the specific products you are mentioning? And please say what your price range is.

Here's a good build for $380 that will definitely run emulators well.

It uses one of AMD's APU processors, so it can even handle some current games. And if you want to spend $20 more, look into getting an aftermarket cooler since the stock coolers are awful.

This is just getting better and better /sarcasm

The case has 2 fans, while my board only has one port.

What type of adapter would I need for this?

I don't think I've ever been this frustrated in my entire life.

No idea what you would need....but that really sucks.
:/

Out of curiosity....what motherboard do you have?

Well, what case do you have? I don't know about other cases, but on my Phantom 410 all three of the fans are connected together through one molex cable. And your PSU likely has plenty of molex connectors.

  • 12.19.2012 1:39 PM PDT

BitFenix Prodigy with the P8 H77-I.

My PSU came with one molex connector. The manual even says so.

According to this, it works with the Evo.

I've used a 212+ with a P8Z77-I before and it worked just fine. Take pictures of what's not fitting, and remember that it takes a little force to bend the X-bracket into the standoffs on purpose; that increased pressure is what makes it better than the stock cooler.

So in your guys's opinion what would be a good budget for someone who needs to buy a monitor, an operating system, and build a tower?

  • 12.19.2012 2:34 PM PDT

Thanks for the adapter.

As for the 212+, I'm using it with a P8H77-I, not an P8Z77-I.

I don't know what you call the pieces soldered on the bottom on the mobo. Those small square black pieces that protrude. Part of the underside bracket piece is actually landing on top of this "black piece" making the brackets stick out too much, making the threading/bold part of the standoff (the part which sticks out from the bottom of the mobo) not long enough to screw into the nut.

That'll have to wait though. Already installed the stock heatsink, and I'm not sure I'm down with disassembling my build for something that might not even work.

edit: Also, for now, would it be safe to only plug in the outtake fan?

Well, it depends on what you're doing, but I can post an example link:

$740 after rebates.

Now, running a budget-build has some flaws. Firstly, if you want to upgrade the CPU to something that can overclock, you'd have to purchase a new power supply and motherboard as well. You would also want to upgrade the case as soon as possible. The GPU would work for now but wouldn't last in the long run. Here's what I would suggest if you followed the above:

$200 more, infinitely better.

If you were to only upgrade a few components from the old model, but not the entire thing, I would get a better power supply, then motherboard, then case, then GPU.
